The Sage of the Six Paths (六道仙人, Rikudō Sennin) was said to be the
legendary figure who founded the ninja world and was the creator and
first user of modern ninjutsu, essentially making him the first shinobi
in the modern context of the term. According to Jiraiya, the Sage was a
priest who appeared long ago in an age of endless war. He was the first
to understand the true meaning of chakra, and tried to use his power
and wisdom to lead the world to peace instead of war. The Sage
travelled throughout the world, spreading his ideas and religion, which
eventually became the techniques used by ninja of the modern era. He
was said to be the only shinobi to possess the Rinnegan, which
presumably laid the groundwork for the other two great dojutsu, the
Sharingan and the Byakugan. He is revered as one of the most legendary
figures in the Naruto universe, and is likely the strongest ninja that
ever existed. He was so powerful that he was said to have created the
moon using Chibaku Tensei.[br]As of now, the only other person known to
possess the Rinnegan was Nagato, also known as Pain, a shinobi from
Amegakure and the former leader of Akatsuki. Whether this means that
the Rinnegan is a unique Kekkei Genkai which isn't passed down by

currently remains a mystery, although Jiraiya, when he was alive,
believed that the Sage could have somehow been "reborn" as Nagato in
the present era. Nagato, however, never referred to himself as the
Sage's reincarnation, and, when using Chibaku Tensei against Naruto's
six-tailed transformation, admitted that the Sage's mastery of the
technique, and of the Rinnegan itself, far surpassed his own. Although
depicted only as a silhouette, several details can be inferred about
the Sage's appearance. He had long, spiky hair flowing backwards, in a
style similar to Madara Uchiha's. He wore what appeared to be a cloak
with a high open collar or armor similar to that worn by Hashirama
Senju, showing his necklace with six Magatama. He seemed to have horns
on his forehead; this could be a Forehead protector similar to the one

appeared to be a sword across his back, whilst the other was a Shakujō,
a Buddhist ringed staff that is used in prayer, but can also be used as

around him. As a result, he can quickly adjust to any situation to make

not involved in a fight, making it the only one (of his reportedly

the books, he grows uncomfortable when reading passages to others,

barely average. By Part II, his chakra is shown to have greatly
increased, as he can perform several chakra-taxing jutsu in rapid
succession. He even increases the number of times he can use his
Lightning Blade per day, using six of them in one battle, and still
having enough chakra to plan using the Mangekyo Sharingan.

proven to be very adept in taijutsu, which, combined with his
impressive speed, allows him to effectively catch his opponents off

exceedingly long time, immediately recognized his assailant to be

multiple elements despite his still young age. Through his skill, he is
able to use them together for various combo attacks or strategies.
Individually, he is able to perform earth-based jutsu with great detail

opponent's movements. The drawback of his Sharingan is that, because
Kakashi has no Uchiha blood, his body cannot completely adjust to it,
hence costing him more chakra than it would an Uchiha. Coupled with the
fact that he cannot deactivate it (and thus must keep it covered when
not using it), he quickly expends his chakra in battle. Because of
this, Kakashi only relies on it when he feels it is an absolute

while testing Naruto and Sakura.

This jutsu has the ability to manipulate space, and was shown to be
able to suck targets or even tear off parts of a target and hurl them
into another dimension. When used against Deidara, he noted Kakashi's
dojutsu to be of Itachi's caliber, who was infamous for his prowess
with Mangekyo jutsu. Despite Kakashi mentioning that his prowess with
it is incomplete, as shown from his difficulty in using it against
Deidara, his skill with it was later great enough to target a small
speeding target with no effect on any other targets. However, this
technique used so much chakra that he had to be hospitalized for a week

Masashi Kishimoto originally intended for Kakashi to debut in the second chapter of the Naruto
manga, appearing prior to the other members of Team 7. This Kakashi was
designed as a laid back, affected, skilled ninja, that ended his
sentences with the polite "de gozaru" in the Japanese versions of the
series, similar to Kenshin Himura in the popular manga series Rurōni Kenshin and Lance Corporal Dororo in the manga and anime Keroro Gunsou.
After speaking with his editor, Kishimoto pushed this debut back,
allowing him to better develop Kakashi and the rest of Team 7. Despite
this, Kakashi retained many of his original personality traits, being
easy-going, unfazed by the actions of others, and usually appearing to
be half-asleep. Kishimoto felt that this made Kakashi a compelling
leader, and helped to keep the diverse members of Team 7 unified.
Because he acted as a link between the other main characters of the
series, Kakashi was rarely featured prominently in promotional artwork,
instead appearing in the background while his students were the focus
of the scene.
When deciding upon Kakashi's name, Kishimoto considered a number of possibilities: Kuwa (クワ, Hoe), Kama (カマ, Scythe), Botan (ボタン, Peony), Enoki (エノキ, Nettle tree), and Kakashi (カカシ, Scarecrow).
He eventually decided upon Kakashi, and remained glad that he did ever
since. In keeping with the meaning of his name, scarecrows were
occasionally used to represent Kakashi; Naruto, for example, used a
