The Sage of the Six Paths (六道仙人, Rikudō Sennin) was said to be the
legendary figure who founded the ninja world and was the creator and
first user of modern ninjutsu, essentially making him the first shinobi
in the modern context of the term. According to Jiraiya, the Sage was a
priest who appeared long ago in an age of endless war. He was the first
to understand the true meaning of chakra, and tried to use his power
and wisdom to lead the world to peace instead of war. The Sage
travelled throughout the world, spreading his ideas and religion, which
eventually became the techniques used by ninja of the modern era. He
was said to be the only shinobi to possess the Rinnegan, which
presumably laid the groundwork for the other two great dojutsu, the
Sharingan and the Byakugan. He is revered as one of the most legendary
figures in the Naruto universe, and is likely the strongest ninja that
ever existed. He was so powerful that he was said to have created the
moon using Chibaku Tensei.[br]As of now, the only other person known to
possess the Rinnegan was Nagato, also known as Pain, a shinobi from
Amegakure and the former leader of Akatsuki. Whether this means that
the Rinnegan is a unique Kekkei Genkai which isn't passed down by
blood, or if Pain was directly descended from the Sage of the Six Paths
currently remains a mystery, although Jiraiya, when he was alive,
believed that the Sage could have somehow been "reborn" as Nagato in
the present era. Nagato, however, never referred to himself as the
Sage's reincarnation, and, when using Chibaku Tensei against Naruto's
six-tailed transformation, admitted that the Sage's mastery of the
technique, and of the Rinnegan itself, far surpassed his own. Although
depicted only as a silhouette, several details can be inferred about
the Sage's appearance. He had long, spiky hair flowing backwards, in a
style similar to Madara Uchiha's. He wore what appeared to be a cloak
with a high open collar or armor similar to that worn by Hashirama
Senju, showing his necklace with six Magatama. He seemed to have horns
on his forehead; this could be a Forehead protector similar to the one
worn by Jiraiya.[br]He was shown carrying two objects. One was what
appeared to be a sword across his back, whilst the other was a Shakujō,
a Buddhist ringed staff that is used in prayer, but can also be used as
a weapon. * Pain's Deva path wore a necklace very similar to the one
worn by the Sage of the Six Paths, although Pain's was black while the
Sage's was white. This might be a reference to the fact that they were
similar, as they both had the Rinnegan, whilst at the same time very
different, as Pain's twisted idea of peace threatened to destroy the
world the Sage had devoted his life to create.[br] * The necklace of
the Sage of the Six Paths might be a reference to the Yasakani Jewel; a
legendary magatama necklace that is part of the Japanese Imperial
Regalia, together with the Kusanagi Sword and the Yata Mirror. The
Yasakani Jewel is the only one of these treasures yet to make an
official appearance in the series. "I am here to provide peace and
order."

Hashirama Senju (千手柱間, Senju Hashirama), the First Hokage (初代火影, Shodai
Hokage; Literally meaning "First or Founding Fire Shadow"), was the
founder of Konoha, the older brother of Tobirama Senju (the Second
Hokage), and the grandfather of Tsunade (the Fifth Hokage) and
Nawaki.Hashirama was originally the leader of the Senju clan. During
the first wars, he and the Senju clan rose to being regarded as one of
the two most powerful clans in the world, rivalling the Uchiha clan.
Because of this, the Senju constantly fought the Uchiha clan, and he
himself against Madara Uchiha personally, even to the point that, when
someone hired the Senju clan, the opposing side would hire the Uchiha
clan, and vice-versa. Eventually growing tired of the constant
fighting, Hashirama and his clan approached the Uchiha and offered a
truce with them. Allied with Madara and his clan, the two groups
started what grew into the Five Great Shinobi Nations by founding
Konohagakure.[br]Whe n deciding who should become the leader of Konoha,
the villagers selected Hashirama over Madara for the title of First
Hokage. Fearing that Hashirama would oppress the Uchiha, Madara left
the village, and challenged Hashirama's rule. In the aftermath of their
battle, Madara was believed to have been killed, and the Valley of the
End was created. To commemorate the battle, two statues, of Madara and
Hashirama, were carved into the earth surrounding the valley.[br]At
some point, Hashirama gained control of several tailed beasts, which he
would later spread out between the warring nations as peace offerings,
and to help equalize the powers between the nations. While he was
Hokage, Hashirama defeated Kakuzu, who received orders from Takigakure
to kill him. However, the war still waged on, and, thinking about the
future of Konoha, he and his younger brother, Tobirama Senju, the
future Second Hokage, trained the young Hiruzen Sarutobi, the future
Third Hokage. Not long after founding Konoha, Hashirama died in battle,
passing on the title of Hokage to Tobirama. Hashirama was shown to be a
very calm and collected person, as well as kind and caring, with a deep
sense of loyalty. He saw the people of Konoha as a part of his own
family, and his legacy took a firm root in the village. He was also
shown to be a very wise and insightful man, as he passed on great
teachings to Hiruzen. It was he who first believed that all Leaf ninja
should show a true loyalty to each other, and that a Kage must be
willing to put his life on the line for his village to set an example
for all others. Hashirama had been noted by both Madara Uchiha and
several Konoha Jonin to be regarded as the most powerful ninja of his
time. He was greatly respected by every shinobi during his life, such
that Madara claimed there was nobody he admired more. He knew how to
perform a great number of jutsu, and was otherwise knowledgeable of
those he could not, as indicated by his ability to recognize the
Summoning: Impure World Resurrection that was used on him. He was most
famous for his Wood Release jutsu, a Kekkei Genkai to mix earth- and
water-natured chakra to create this new element. By converting chakra
into the source of life, he was able to create trees, cause them to
grow to great sizes, and manipulate them to diverse shapes and battle
uses at will. It was said this ability was used to create the very
landscape and foundation that Konoha is built on. This ability was
apparently unique to him, since none of his relatives have been shown
using the ability. Even Yamato, the only person to have proved
compatible with Hashirama's genes, found his use of Wood Release to be
much weaker in raw power. Yamato has also shown great skill in standard
water and earth techniques, so it is presumed Hashirama could do water
and earth techniques as well.[br]The ability Orochimaru most highly
praised him for was his unique ability to control tailed beasts. Of all
his considerable talents, it was this ability in particular that made
Hashirama unparalleled in the shinobi world. At one time, he had many
of the beasts in his possession, and was able to defeat the Nine-Tailed
Demon Fox during his battle with Madara. This ability was greatly
amplified by his crystal necklace, which Yamato suggested was a
requirement to control even Naruto's partial lapses into tailed forms.

Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara), who posed as Tobi[1] (トビ) when
first introduced, is a founder of Konohagakure and Akatsuki, and the
former leader of the Uchiha clan. When he joined Akatsuki as Tobi
(replacing Sasori), he was partnered with Deidara, revealing himself as
Madara after Deidara's death. He has been recognized by Kisame
Hoshigaki as once being the Mizukage of Kirigakure, although it is
unknown when. Decades before the start of the series, Madara grew up in
constant competition with his younger brother, Izuna Uchiha, who were
both known as the most gifted members of their clan. Their competition
led to both gaining the Mangekyo Sharingan, and, with it, they were
able to take control of the Uchiha clan, Madara acting as its leader.
Even by his clan's standards, Madara's chakra was unusually strong.
Under his leadership, the clan conquered all they came across, but,
over time, he began to lose his sight because of the Mangekyo
Sharingan. To regain his vision, he took his brother's eyes (an act
Madara said his brother had consented to), allowing him to continue to
lead the Uchiha to prosperity.[br]In the years that followed, the
Uchiha constantly clashed with the equally powerful Senju clan. To
bring an end to the constant fighting, the leader of the Senju,
Hashirama Senju, approached Madara with an offering of peace. Although
Madara never wanted peace with the Senju, the rest of the Uchiha wanted
to end the fighting, and Madara had no choice but to go along with
their decision. The Senju, the Uchiha, and all the clans they had
conquered came together to form the village of Konohagakure. Against
Madara's wishes, the villagers selected Hashirama as the village's
First Hokage. Madara feared that Hashirama would oppress the Uchiha,
and tried to rally support for challenging his leadership. Rather than
help him, however, the Uchiha turned their backs on him, believing his
only motive was greed.[br]Madara's statue at the Valley of the
End.[br]Abandoned by his clan, Madara left the village so that he could
return to challenge Hashirama in battle. They fought at the site that
would someday be called the Valley of the End, where, although Madara
called upon the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, he was defeated, and was
believed to have died. Madara faded into memory, and, in time, would
found Akatsuki and become Kirigakure's Mizukage.[br]Twelve years before
the start of the series, the Nine-Tails attacked Konoha. Although
Madara denied having had any involvement in the attack, Itachi Uchiha
and Minato Namikaze said that the Nine-Tails was under Madara's control
at the time. A few years later, he infiltrated Konoha to try and
rekindle the flames of war. He was found by Itachi first, who convinced
Madara to spare the village in exchange for helping to wipe out the
Uchiha clan for deserting him decades earlier. Madara complied,
training Itachi and providing assistance. Itachi never truly trusted
Madara, however, and kept an eye on him for the rest of his life. To
keep in Akatsuki's shadow, Madara eventually took on the disguise of
Tobi,[1] giving orders to Pain in secret. He wears an orange,
swirl-patterned mask that reveals only his right eye. When he trained
Itachi, he wore a slightly different mask with black swirl-like
patterns on it, and his hair was cut a little shorter. His hair is cut
down completely from the days of Konoha's founding, and he wears a
uniform consisting of a number of bolts and pins, which is usually
concealed by his Akatsuki cloak.[2][br]While acting as Tobi, he is
carefree and goofy, something that annoys most of the other members.
Deidara, who believed all within Akatsuki should be serious and calm,
was not pleased with Tobi's childish personality, and frequently
attacked the latter in a comedic fashion when annoyed. Apparently,
Madara is very committed to keeping his identity secret, as he has been
seen keeping up his goofy appearance even when no-one was around (at
least during the anime's filler arc). Kisame and Zetsu, on the other
hand, somewhat appreciate Tobi's ability to brighten up a gloomy organization
such as theirs. Madara exhibits a very calm and serious personality. He
speaks with less formal diction, such as not using honorifics. He spoke
down to Pain (going so far as to refer to him as a "minion"). He has
great faith in his own abilities, to the point of acting arrogant on
occassion, only acting polite to Sasuke Uchiha. He will abandon his
normal personality in favor of the Tobi personality when the situation
calls for it, as he did when distracting a group of Konoha ninja. He is
also well-versed in rhetoric and is capable of gaining others' trust
without revealing his goals to them.[br]Madara has shown great ability
in manipulating others to do his work for him. Minato believed that he
was using Pain's ideology against him in order to control him. He
similarly befriended Sasuke in order to get him to join Akatsuki by
telling him about Itachi's past, even though he has an apparent
interest in Sasuke and his abilities. While Akatsuki's goal to gain the
tailed beasts is believed by most of the members to be a step in
gaining control over the world, Madara's intentions have yet to be
revealed. Most of Madara's abilities are still unknown. He is thought
to be the strongest Uchiha to ever live, and one of the most gifted
ninja in history. He was described as a "very powerful ninja" by Minato
Namikaze himself. He has also been noted to have been born with
particularly powerful chakra, which he states is the reason for his
"stubborn refusal to die". Even the Nine-Tails mentioned that Madara's
chakra is even more sinister than its own. One of the abilities he has
actually displayed is his speed, which, as Tobi, was apparently his
only claim to fame. To that end, Kisame commented "he is a good
runner". Madara also appears to have immense strength, as he was able
to stop a slash from Suigetsu's giant sword with a single arm.[6][br]He
was armed with a giant kusarigama war fan attached to it during the
time of Konoha's founding, fitting with his clan's name, which means
"paper fan". He is also said to have been able to summon the
Nine-Tails. It is unclear if this referred to the use of the Summoning
Technique or if he could produce enough human malice to bring it to his
location. During Itachi's fight with Sasuke, it was revealed that
Madara Uchiha and his younger brother, Izuna, were the first members of
the Uchiha to activate the Mangekyo Sharingan, and used its power to
take over the clan. After implanting his brother's eyes into his own
body, Madara then awakened a new "Eternal" Mangekyo Sharingan, a
combination of his own and Izuna's Mangekyo Sharingan which led to him
acquiring immortality. With it, Madara never had to fear the risk of
losing his eyesight again. Madara's knowledge and mastery of this
powerful Dojutsu allowed him to fight on par with Hashirama, and also
gave him the power to forcibly subdue the Nine-Tails.[br]Telepor
tation[br]Madara shows the ability to recover from debilitating or even
fatal blows. After being slashed across the midsection by Sasuke's
sword, he collapsed, only to stand up again a few seconds later and
complain about the speed of the attack.[7] The same things occured when
Naruto hit him in the back with a Rasengan, where the attack literally
phased through him, avoiding damage.[8] His ability's consistency is
confirmed when Sasuke attempted a Chidori on him, and, as predicted, he
phased through Madara as Naruto had done earlier.[9][br]Madar a also
shows the ability to travel long distances within relatively short
timespans, escaping the final explosion created by Deidara and
reappearing in Amegakure within a very short period. It was speculated
by Kakashi that he uses time/space Ninjutsu to instantly send himself
or even parts of his body to different locations or some sort of void
and then instantly bring them back. It is revealed that Madara can find
the exact location of a person and warp himself to that place, stating
that it is in his power. Before Tobi was revealed to be Madara Uchiha,
several fans hypothesized that he was Obito Uchiha, as his only shown
eye was the opposite of the eye that was inserted into Kakashi. They
also have similar personalities, as well as the same hairstyles. The
spelling of Obito was also similar to Tobi, creating the fan reference
of ObiTobi, or Tobito. Even though Tobi has been referred to as Madara
several times in the series, some fans still insist that Obito is
somehow connected to Tobi or Madara. * The phrase "Tobi is a good boy"
has proven to be very popular among the Naruto community. Although not
said by Tobi himself (Zetsu's white half actually uttered the phrase to
his black half after stating Tobi's intentions of joining Akatsuki
wasn't so simple to accomplish), many have found the comment to be
rather hilarious and, as such, Tobi is depicted as a carefree child or
a good-natured character in many fanmade art and videos on YouTube
while incorporating the phrase. Many have altered the phrase, after
Tobi revealing that he is Madara, saying "Tobi is a bad boy".[br] *
Although Itachi claimed that Madara had created Akatsuki in chapter
386, Pain said that he created it in chapter 436.[br] * Madara (斑) can
be translated as "spots". Tobi can be translated as "jump" (飛), or as
"kite" (鳶). The latter translation connects Tobi with Taka through the
Japanese proverb "a hawk born from a kite" (鳶が鷹を生む, tobi ga taka o
umu), meaning that an extraordinarily gifted child can be born from
ordinary parents.[br] * Despite claiming that his memory has faded in
time, Madara is still well known to many ninjas in the world, even in
present time, as one of the most dangerous missing-nins.[br] *

Minato Namikaze (波風ミナト, Namikaze Minato), also known as Konoha's Yellow
Flash (木ノ葉の黄色� ��閃光, Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō), was the Fourth Hokage
(四代目火影, Yondaime Hokage; Literally meaning "Fourth Fire Shadow") and
the father of Naruto Uzumaki. He was the student of Jiraiya and the
teacher of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin. During Kakashi
Gaiden, set during the Third Great Shinobi World War, Minato led his
team on a mission into Kusagakure. Because Kakashi had recently become
a Jonin, Minato gave leadership of the mission to Kakashi, while he
went to help Konoha's forces on the front lines. Before leaving, he
gave Kakashi a special kunai as a congratulatory present, outfitted
with the seal used for his Flying Thunder God Technique.[br]While
helping his fellow Konoha ninja, he used the Flying Thunder God
Technique to wipe out all of the opposing Iwagakure ninja in an
instant. He returned to Kakashi in time to save him from another group
of Iwagakure ninja, but could not save Obito. When Kakashi and Rin
recovered from the ordeal, Minato helped them complete the task of
destroying the Kannabi Bridge. Some time after the war ended, Minato
was chosen by Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, to lead as the Fourth
Hokage before he was even 30 years of age.[1] During his reign, he had
a relationship with Kushina Uzumaki, who would later become pregnant
with his son. After reading Jiraiya's book, where the main character
was named Naruto, Minato and Kushina decided to name their son
"Naruto", in the hopes that he would grow up to be just like the Naruto
of the book (Jiraiya's). This, in turn, made Jiraiya Naruto's
godfather.[br]Soon after Naruto was born, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox
attacked Konoha. Minato rushed to the village's help, where he and
Gamabunta faced off against the Nine-Tails, but the beast's power could
not be matched. Recognizing that the Nine-Tails was being controlled by
Madara Uchiha, Minato decided to defeat it and give Konoha the means to
combat Madara if he should ever attack the village again. He used the
Dead Demon Consuming Seal to seal the Nine-Tails into Naruto's body,
hoping that Naruto would someday be able to make use of its power. The
act cost Minato his life, and he died as the village's greatest hero.
Jiraiya and Tsunade pointed out that, while Naruto physically bears
great resemblance to Minato, his personality and style of Ninjutsu are
almost identical to his mother. While Naruto is boisterous and
relatively thick, Minato was calm, collected, and a natural genius.
When faced with an enemy, he could kill in cold blood, and seemed well
aware of the terror his reputation inspired in his foes. He appeared to
be respectful of those around him, as he was reproachful of freely
speaking of others' pasts, and was said to have been a very nice
person.[br]Jiraiya had said that Minato was a shrewd person, and was
not the type to do something without reason. He was also shown to be
very intuitive and analytical from how quickly he could determine the
strength and weakness of a person's technique. All in all, Minato was
known for his unbeatable determination and unbelievable drive, which he
passed onto his son. His devotion to the village and his love for his
friends inspired all those around him, and as such, he became
well-liked by the villagers. Minato was nevertheless understanding the
fact that Naruto might feel hurt by the fact that his own father had
sealed a monster inside him. Minato's dying wish was for Konoha to view
Naruto as a hero who had helped defeat the Nine-Tails, rather than the
host of the monster that had attacked the village. However, few of the
villagers would honor this request, leaving Naruto to grow up as an
outcast of the village. During the course of the series, Naruto is able
to change how the villagers view him for the better, but at the same
time must combat the Nine-Tails sealed within him. All the while,
Naruto would never know who his parents were, Hiruzen feeling it was
best that the world not know who Naruto's father was.[br]With Minato's
death, Hiruzen was forced to resume his position as Hokage, due to
Minato not being able to choose his successor. He made a decree that
forbade the villagers from speaking aloud that Naruto was the container
of the Nine-Tails, hoping that the villagers' children would not shun
him as their parents did. He otherwise tried to make Naruto's life as
comfortable as he could, being one of the few people to appreciate him
and putting up with his mischievous deeds.[br]During the sealing
process, Minato split the Nine-Tails' chakra in two, giving Naruto
access to the Yang chakra and permanently cutting off access to the
Yin. He left Jiraiya a key to the seal that kept the Nine-Tails sealed
within Naruto, to be used to strengthen it whenever it began to weaken.
As a final safety measure, he left an imprint of himself within
Naruto's subconscious that would react whenever the seal was on the
verge of breaking. This imprint could watch Naruto grow up and had the
one-time ability of returning the seal to its original strength. It was
not until Pain attacked Konoha that he made an actual appearance in the
story. When Naruto started to give into the temptations of power from
the Nine-Tails, and was about to release the beast, the imprint Minato
left behind stopped him. Although he voiced his dislike of seeing the
Nine-Tails again, he pointed out that its actions had allowed him to
see his son. Naruto picked up on this, and was overjoyed to finally
find out who his father was. Minato tried to talk with Naruto, but the
Nine-Tails kept interrupting the conversation, so they went someplace
that was quiet. After the shock of finding his father, Naruto was
quickly outraged at the idea that Minato would seal the Nine-Tails in
his own son, and punched him in the gut. Minato apologized for having
sealed the Nine-Tails in his own son and explained his reasoning for
doing it, and Naruto quickly got over his rage at the thought of being
the Fourth's son.[br]Because he had a limited amount of time to talk to
Naruto, Minato briefly caught up with him, at the same time indicating
that he knew Pain had killed Jiraiya. He expressed his suspicions that
Pain, like the Nine-Tails years earlier, was being controlled by Madara
Uchiha. He went onto suggest that, so long as the current ninja system
exists, people like Pain, who were ruined by war and only went on to
create new wars, will continue to exist. He restored the seal on
Naruto's stomach, and encouraged Naruto to find a way to stop the
vicious cycle of death and destruction, voicing his confidence in
Naruto before disappearing. According to Jiraiya, Minato was easily one
of the most gifted shinobi who ever lived. He created the Rasengan, a
technique that does not rely on hand signs, but instead uses a
concentration of spinning chakra in the palm, which causes immense
damage to its target on contact. Minato had planned to add his own
nature manipulation training to the Rasengan, making it even more
powerful, but couldn't manage to combine the two prior to his premature
death. He had keen knowledge of fūinjutsu, and was one of the few
people capable of getting Gamabunta to work with him.[br]The customized
seal marked kunai Minato uses for his Flying Thunder God
Technique.[br]It is unknown exactly how strong Minato was in combat.
Flee-on-sight orders were given to enemy shinobi during the Third Great
Shinobi World War in case he ever appeared on the battlefield. This
stemmed from his Flying Thunder God Technique, which essentially
allowed him to teleport to any location with the use of a special seal.
By throwing kunai that had the seal attached to them behind enemy
lines, Minato could wipe out an entire platoon in the blink of an eye
without receiving a scratch. This earned him the nickname of Konoha's
Yellow Flash, because of the speed at which Minato (with his yellow
hair) moved when using this jutsu, even without which he showed
seemingly untraceable raw speed. Before it was revealed true, many fans
speculated that Minato was Naruto's father, mostly because of their
nearly identical physique and looks. The two characters also have the
same blood type and technique styles. Throughout the course of the
series, the characters who knew Minato had also given references to him
when talking about Naruto. However, until it was revealed in Chapter
367, information about Naruto's family relations had been carefully
avoided.[br]Before Pain (specifically the Deva path) was revealed, some
speculated that Minato was the leader of Akatsuki, because their
silhouettes were similar, and Pain had some knowledge of Konoha. This
theory was propagated by a fan-made manga collage, where the Akatsuki
leader revealed himself as Minato.[br]In scenes where the toad
summoning contract is present, the names of the most recent characters
to sign the contract are shown. Although the names are indecipherable,
some fans insisted that, in the column where the Fourth Hokage's name
was supposedly written, "Arashi Uzumaki" was given. Minato means
"harbor" (港) and Namikaze means "waves and wind" (波風). * Minato's hobby
is reading. Especially Jiraiya's novels are his favorite.[br] *

Hiruzen Sarutobi (猿飛ヒルゼン, Sarutobi Hiruzen) was the Third Hokage
(三代目火影, Sandaime Hokage; Literally meaning "Third Fire Shadow").
Together with Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, he was the student of
the first two Hokages, Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju, and the
teacher of Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. As a child, Hiruzen was a
prodigy who truly stood out in talent. He and his former teammates,
Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, were students of Tobirama, who
would eventually be chosen as the Second Hokage. Later in his life, he
became the teacher of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade, who would go on
to become known as the "Legendary Three Ninja" (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no
Sannin). In time, he became the father of two children, Asuma Sarutobi
and one who has yet to be seen in the series. This unnamed child would
later give Hiruzen a grandson: Konohamaru Sarutobi.[br]While Orochimaru
was his student, Hiruzen came to appreciate Orochimaru's natural
talent, and often told Jiraiya to be more like him. He also came to
recognize an inner malice and a lust for power within Orochimaru, and
tried to steer his student away from these personality traits. After
taking the position of Hokage, and occupying it for many years, Hiruzen
started looking for a successor to the title. While he hoped to be able
to give the position to Orochimaru, it became apparent that Orochimaru
was only interested in the role of Hokage for the power it offered. As
such, Hiruzen passed on the role of Hokage to one of Jiraiya's pupils,
Minato Namikaze.[br]Soon after, Minato however sacrificed his life to
seal the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox within his newborn son, Naruto Uzumaki,
forcing Hiruzen to reassume the role of Hokage. After reacquiring his
title, Hiruzen began investigating a number of disappearances within
Konoha. Upon reaching the source of the abductions, he found Orochimaru
to be the one responsible. Having used those that he kidnapped as test
subjects in his quest to gain immortality, Orochimaru allowed his
former master a chance to kill him. Ultimately, Hiruzen was unable to
bring himself to kill his former prodigy, allowing Orochimaru to
escape.[1][br]Accord ing to Tobi, Hiruzen was one of four Konoha elders
involved in the massacre of the Uchiha clan. Although he tried to find
a peaceful alternative, his former rival for the position of the Third
Hokage, Danzo, had acted behind his back. Itachi Uchiha was ordered to
wipe out the Uchiha, though when he proved unable to kill his brother,
Sasuke, Hiruzen promised to keep Sasuke safe. It was also revealed that
he knew Naruto was the Fourth Hokage's son the entire time, and kept it
a secret from those who didn't know, to protect Naruto from trouble.Due
to the long life he had lived, Hiruzen served as a source of wisdom for
much of the series, passing on the things he had learned to the next
generation. As Hokage, he had also acquired a habit of attempting to
end things peacefully, and did what he could to avoid bloodshed amongst
his allies and his enemies. At the series' start, Hiruzen was one of
the few people who saw Naruto as more than the container of the
Nine-Tails, and, as such, became someone that Naruto truly admired,
even thinking of Hiruzen as a grandfather-figure.r [br]Despite his
standing as Hokage, he seemed to have had some sense of lecherousness
in him, as he spent much of his free time talking to young girls. When
Jiraiya was still his student, he offered to help Jiraiya test the
jutsu that would allow the user to spy on naked women unnoticed. Even
Jiraiya, in this instance, noted his sensei's perverted qualities. He
also fell victim to Naruto's Sexy Technique on more than one occasion.
Hiruzen was, unarguably, one of the most powerful shinobi in history.
In fact, he was so immensely powerful that he was admired as the God of
Shinobi (忍の神, Shinobi no Kami) in his prime. According to Iruka, he was
said to be the strongest Hokage Konoha ever had. Enma commented on his
battle with Orochimaru, saying that it was "miserable" compared to his
prime, even though he had clearly been able to withstand Orochimaru and
two former Hokages. He was also the longest living and longest reigning
Hokage, and apparently had an undefeated streak, having defeated all
foes that came before him until he sacrificed himself in order to stop
Orochimaru. Hiruzen was called The Professor (プロフェッサ� ��, Purofessā),
due to his mastery of all forms of shinobi combat, and his vast
knowledge of jutsu, purportedly knowing all the techniques within
Konoha. The first technique he was seen using was the Telescope
Technique, which allowed him to observe others through his crystal ball
over long distances.[6] With Roof Tile Shuriken, he could launch nearby
tiles at an opponent with varying intensities, and by throwing a single
shuriken at an opponent, he could replicate it to surround the opponent
through Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique.[br]The more battle-oriented
techniques he was seen using primarily consisted of elemental attacks,
as he had an affinity for fire and earth. Fire Release: Fire Dragon
Flame Missile allowed him to exhale a stream of fire from his mouth.
Earth Release: Earth Flow River created a river of mud beneath the
opponent to throw them off balance, and he could use the mud with Earth
Release: Earth Dragon Bullet, which creates a dragon's head that
launches mud balls at an opponent. He had also been shown to be adept
in elemental collaboration jutsu, as seen when he ignited the mud ball
projectiles with Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Missile. Earth
Release: Earth Style Wall allowed Hiruzen to spit a stream of mud that
solidifies into a protective shield.[br]Orochimar u showed some
surprise that he didn't use the Shadow Clone Technique during their
battle. An ANBU agent watching the battle scene from nearby mentioned
that Hiruzen's chakra levels had dropped to a point where he couldn't
use it as much. While this might contradict the large amount of
techniques he used in his battle with Orochimaru, it could also show
his great chakra control, needing only the minimum amount of chakra to
use each technique. He has combined Shadow Cloning with his own
invention, the Sexy Jutsu. What a foolish ninja technique ... and he
could probably get me with it, too." When the tree leaves dance, one shall find flames. The
fire's shadow will illuminate the village, and once again, tree leaves
shall bud anew."

Sakumo Hatake (はたけサクモ, Hatake Sakumo), also known as Konoha's White
Fang (木ノ葉の白い� ��, Konoha no Shiroi Kiba; English TV "White Fang of the
Leaf"), is the father of Kakashi Hatake. Sakumo was a famous and
powerful ninja of Konohagakure who, during his life, was greater than
even the Sannin. His son, Kakashi, idolized him and sought to become
just as great a ninja as his father; his wife had died when Kakashi was
very young. Five years before the events Kakashi Gaiden, Sakumo and his
team were sent on a mission of great importance to Konoha. When his
teammates' lives were endangered, Sakumo chose to abandon the mission
in order to save them. He was disgraced when he returned home, shunned
by everyone in the village, even those he had saved. Dishonored, Sakumo
fell into a deep depression, as well as a drop in his skills.
Eventually, he committed suicide, which caused Kakashi to live strictly
according to the Ninja Code for the next few years. Sakumo's soul spent
the next few years waiting in an area of darkness, for a chance to meet
up with his son. Sakumo's appearance has regularly been compared to
that of Kakashi, often when Kakashi is mistaken for his father. He
possesses the same white-colored hair with the addition of a long
ponytail similar to Jiraiya's, and a mess of hair on his head that
hangs over his forehead protector. His facial features are more
distinguished compared to Kakashi's visible ones.Sakumo was a very kind
and loyal man. Despite his tremendous fame and power as a ninja, he was
a very humble man, which made his only son Kakashi truly look up to and
idolize him. He had a deep devotion to his country and an even greater
commitment to his allies and loved ones to the point he would put their
well-being before anything else. His commitment was so great that he
would sacrifice the completion of a mission in order to save his
teammates which led to him being a public figure of hate and ridicule.
Like his son, Sakumo was a gifted shinobi praised for his talents in
the ninja arts even by the likes of Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage.
In battle, Sakumo was a truly powerful shinobi, his prowess surpassing
that of the Sannin. The mere idea of facing Sakumo brought fear to
enemies, as shown from the reaction of an Iwagakure shinobi initially
believing Kakashi to be his father. His primary weapon during battle
was a tanto called the White Light Chakra Sabre that would emit a trail
of white chakra when swung, earning him the nickname "Konoha's White
Fang". After he died, he left his tanto to Kakashi, which was later on
cut in half when Kakashi fought an Iwagakure shinobi. * He is similar
to Naruto's father, the Fourth Hokage. Both were respected and feared
throughout the world, both had nearly identical resemblances with their
sons, and both died in their sons' youth. Because of their deaths,
their respective sons would later grow up to be shinobi seen as
surpassing their fathers.[br] * Despite being disgraced, Sakumo's name
still has some standing as displayed when the Fire Daimyo seemed
pleased when Kakashi was recommended to become the sixth Hokage.

Nagato (長門), better known as Pain (ペイン, Pein), was the recognized
leader of Akatsuki and Amegakure and was a major antagonist in the
series. Referred to as "Leader" by all Akatsuki members, except for
Konan (who referred to him by his name) he directed the actions of the
rest of the members and maintained authority over them. However, he
took orders from Tobi,[1] who was actually Madara Uchiha, the
benefactor of Akatsuki. During one of the great shinobi wars in
Amegakure, two Konoha shinobi broke into Nagato's house looking for
food, thinking that the house had been abandoned. His parents,
believing they were going to be killed, attacked the two strangers so
Nagato could escape. Thinking that they were enemy ninja, the Konoha
shinobi killed Nagato's parents, prompting Nagato to awaken his
Rinnegan and dispose of the intruders. He would come to consider this
incident the first great pain of his life.[2][br]Having no-one left to
call family, Nagato left his home after burying his parents, and began
wandering aimlessly with nothing but a few supplies, along with meeting
and befriending a stray dog, which he named 'Chibi'. He later grouped
up with fellow orphans, Konan and Yahiko, and they looked after each
other.[3] One day, the three friends got caught in the crossfire of a
battle between the Legendary Sannin and Hanzō, resulting in Chibi dying
in Nagato's arms. This infuriated Yahiko, to the point of declaring
that he would become a god to stop all madness, which eventually became
Nagato's desire.[br]After the Great War ended, Nagato and his friends
met the Sannin, who at first were less than willing to help them.
Orochimaru even suggested to kill them, as they were orphans of war,
and as such would only live their lives full of misery. Jiraiya, on the
other hand, decided that he would take care of them, to compensate for
what the Sannin did.[br]One night, at dinner, Nagato cried because
eating together with his master and friends reminded him of his family.
Later that night, he ran away with Yahiko. The two were attacked by an
Iwagakure chunin, who injured Yahiko. To his horror, Nagato activated
his Rinnegan, and killed the ninja. When Jiraiya found out about this,
he decided to train them in ninjutsu.[4] Nagato was very emotional
about killing the ninja, and asked Jiraiya for help so he could protect
Konan and Yahiko. Jiraiya's response was for Nagato to grow up. He also
revealed the truth behind Nagato's Rinnegan: that his eyes might be the
key to finding the peace they both desired for the world.[br]After
three years, Jiraiya felt they were strong enough to fend for
themselves, so he began to head home. Jiraiya believed Nagato to have
later died with the other orphans under unexplained circumstances,[5]
but had told Konan that, whenever their names were mentioned outside
their village, it was always about someone being killed when they
opposed them.[br]In truth, Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko began a quest to
find the peace that they desired, just as Jiraiya had done. While
becoming full-fledged Rain ninja, they followed their own path, and
began gathering several supporters, with Yahiko as their leader.
Unfortunately, then Amegakure leader, Hanzō, viewed Yahiko's gang as a
threat to his position as leader and schemed with Danzo and Konoha's
Foundation to eliminate them. Luring Yahiko's group into a trap under
the guise of three-way peace talks with the Land of Fire, Land of Wind,
and Land of Earth, Hanzō took Konan hostage, and used her life as a
bargaining chip to try and force Nagato to kill Yahiko. Faced with a
horrible decision, and with both Konan and Yahiko showing their
willingness to die for the sake of the other, Nagato struggled with
himself, until Yahiko physically forced Nagato to kill him by placing
the kunai in his hand and guiding it. With Yahiko's dying breath, he
told Nagato to survive, because he believed in Jiraiya's words that
Nagato would become the world's saviour. This would become the second
great pain of Nagato's life.[br]After Yahiko's death, Hanzō ordered his
shinobi to kill Nagato as well, but Nagato managed to unleash his
Shinra Tensei to repel their kunai. As Nagato rescued Konan, Hanzō
captured him with exploding tags, severely burning his legs and hands
in the resulting explosion. However, Nagato continued to hold his
ground, and returned Konan to safety, telling her to take hold of
Yahiko's body. Nagato then performed Summoning: Demonic Statue of the
Outer Path, despite Konan's pleas, and used the Illusionary Dragon Nine
Consuming Seal statue to decimate both Hanzō and Danzo's forces. The
technique didn't kill Hanzō and Danzo, as they were able to flee.
However, it left Nagato emaciated, with numerous chakra rods embedded
in his back, which, along with the injuries from the explosion, seemed
to necessitate his future use of a robotic transport. Leadership of the
gang passed on to Nagato as he scratched through the symbol of his
Amegakure forehead protector, presumably indicating both the origin of
the rebellion that would lead to civil war, and the beginning of his
teaching of enlightenment through pain.[br]Upon adopting the alias
"Pain", Nagato led the rebelling forces in the Amegakure civil war, and
took control of the village by assassinating Hanzō, then solidified his
leadership by systematically killing anyone who had direct ties to the
former leader. Pain and his faction then wore their forehead protectors
with scratches through them (a practice shared by the members of
Akatsuki), to symbolize their rebellion, and continued to wear them
even after gaining control of the country, despite no longer being
labeled as missing-nin, to symbolize their victory in the conflict.
Nagato was a sensitive but kind boy, prone to crying, and was
traumatized by the idea he had killed another man, even to save his
friend Yahiko. Scared and unsure of his place in the world, he desired
to help those he cared about, but never knew how. Nevertheless, he was
a talented and gifted student, mastering every technique Jiraiya had
taught him.[br]As Pain, his personality was very different, having
become a calm, serious, aloof, and detached man. Apparently believing
traumas he experienced in his youth had enlightened him to the true
meaning of pain and suffering, he considered himself a deity, and
believed he had evolved beyond a mere human being. He sought to show
the world the meaning of pain by using an ultimate weapon to deter
future wars, by means similar to "mutually assured destruction", and
showed no moral qualms about his actions. He was also willing to kill
his own teacher, Jiraiya, in cold blood, and brutally executed all of
Hanzō's friends and family to ensure Amegakure's compliance to his
takeover. He even went so far as to proclaim himself a "god of peace",
that had to guide the world to maturity through pain. Finally, he felt
that no-one could understand true peace unless they understood "true"
pain, something his childhood friend Yahiko believed. Minato Namikaze
believed Madara Uchiha to have been using this philosophy in his
favour, in order to manipulate Nagato.[br]Pain also held hatred for
Konoha, because, during the war between Konohagakure and Amegakure, his
parents died by the hands of two Konoha ninjas. Nagato's hatred was
quelled when he met Jiraiya, who gave him a new goal in life: to
protect his friends. However, when Danzo teamed up with Hanzō and
forced him to kill Yahiko, Nagato realized that his goal was worthless,
and hated Konoha even more, to the point of losing his affections for
Jiraiya.[br]Nonethel ess, he was seen to be quite respectful,
particularly to the fallen and the dead. Given the Akatsuki members'
frequent bickering, he often restrained them, and encouraged better
relations among members. He even suggested that they mourn for Deidara
after his passing, and reprimanded Kisame for calling Hidan and Kakuzu
the "Zombie Brothers". After his battle with Jiraiya, he held a moment
of silence for his former teacher, out of respect for his
power.[br]Pain was also very respectful and kind to his childhood
friend, Konan, who he claimed to be his "angel" in Amegakure. He was
shown protecting her, without request or hesitation, from Jiraiya,
before his battle with his former teacher. Apparently, she was the only
Akatsuki member that addressed him by his names, Pain and Nagato. Pain
first appeared as a hologram at the end of Part I in a meeting with
other Akatsuki members, stating the need to capture the tailed beasts,
particularly the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. He appeared in the same form at
various points in Part II, regulating the actions of other Akatsuki
members. As Part II progressed, portions of his face were shown, until
he made his debut in the manga, alongside Konan, when receiving orders
from Madara Uchiha. Madara assigned him to capture Naruto Uzumaki, the
jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails. As the leader of Akatsuki, and one of the
two sides of the Amegakure Civil War, Nagato was an extraordinarily
powerful shinobi, who could easily be considered to be Kage-level,
maybe even higher. His partner, Konan, had stated that he had never
lost a single battle, but it wasn't until his fight with Naruto that he
encountered an opponent capable of defeating him.[7] He was also able
to single-handedly defeat and overthrow the former Amegakure leader,
Hanzō, and made short work of Jiraiya after unveiling all six of his
bodies (though he admitted that killing Jiraiya would have been very
unlikely had Jiraiya had prior knowledge of his six separate bodies).
Nagato's incredible power stemmed mainly from his Kekkei Genkai, the
Rinnegan. This was originally possessed by the Sage of the Six Paths,
the world's first ninja, and the founder of modern ninjutsu. The
Rinnegan's abilities were largely unknown, but it did permit the user
to use all types of elemental chakra, and allowed Nagato to master
every technique Jiraiya taught him. It also enhanced his vision of
chakra in a similar manner to the Uchiha Clan's Sharingan and the Hyuga
clan's Byakugan, allowing him to see the chakra of barrier techniques
around the perimeter of his location, and the chakra gathered at a
shinobi's feet.note: para sakin mystery parin ung rinnegan ni nagato,
ndi ko alam if ancestor nya c rikudou,//Nagato's most powerful and most
used technique was the Six Paths of Pain (ペイン六道, Pein Rikudō). This
technique allowed Nagato to control six separate bodies as though they
were his own. Each of these bodies were reanimated corpses that were
both kept mobile by and made use of Nagato's chakra. While controlling
them, Nagato used the alias "Pain", yet still regarded them as separate
entities from himself.[8][br]In order to use the technique, Nagato
remained in a machine, that moved with six relatively small mechanical
legs, and used several large chakra rods on his back to transmit
chakra. From that point, the chakra was picked up by the numerous
receivers, modelled as body piercings on each body. To control them,
Nagato had to be close by, and ideally at the highest possible point,
so he could have the best possible range.[br]Based on the six Buddhist
paths of Reincarnation, each body was named after the one of the
different "paths": Deva, Asura, Human, Animal, Preta, and Naraka. The
only common feature shared by these bodies was their bright orange hair
and Rinnegan eyes. Each also had a vast number of body and facial
piercings of various shapes, sizes, and patterns. Each body seemed to
serve a specific purpose in battle, such as summoning, repairing, and
defensive capabilities. * His name means "long-lasting gate".[br] * Due
to the unique nature of Nagato/Pain, Nagato's name was used for all
actions done by the main body, while Pain was used for all the actions
done by the Deva path.[br] * The original Six Paths of Pain were
composed of individuals associated with Jiraiya.[br] * As Nagato's Six
Paths of Pain were all deceased ninja, it could also be assumed that
Animal path's summonings were reanimated corpses as well, as they too
had several body piercings and Rinnegan eyes (possibly meaning that
Nagato could see through their eyes as well).[br] * Whether or not
Nagato was actually crippled has yet to be confirmed, but it seemed
that the black rods in his back were responsible for his weakened
state.[br] * Pain's defeat came through a combination of Naruto's
abilities and the information gathered by Tsunade, Jiraiya, and
Kakashi.[br] * Pain appeared to have a habit of not checking to see if
his defeated opponents were dead or not. * (At meeting in Part I) "Of
course ... no mistakes. Remember what we seek ... everything, including
the Nine-Tailed Fox!"[br] * "We're both of the same breed, after all
... motives for war are of no concern. Religion, ideology, resources,
land, spite, love, or just because ... no matter how pathetic the
reason, it's enough to start war."[br] * (To Jiraiya) "We are Pain! We
are God!"[br] * "Those who do not understand true pain can never
understand true peace."[br] * "We are but men, drawn to act in the name
of revenge we deem to be "justice". But when we call our vengeance
"justice", it only breeds more revenge ... forging the first link in
the chains of hatred."[br] * (To Tsunade) "I want you to feel pain, to
think about pain, to accept pain, to know pain."[9][br] * (To Jiraiya)
"But someday I’ll break the curse. If there’s such a thing as peace, I

Hanzō (半蔵), also known as Hanzō of the Salamander (山椒魚の半蔵, Sanshōuo no
Hanzō), was a legendary ninja who was the former leader of Amegakure.
He was very security-conscious, being guarded twenty-four hours a day
and having anyone who wanted to see him thoroughly searched. He became
famous around the time of the Second Great Ninja War. Little is known
of his abilities aside from his riding on the head of a giant
salamander (presumably a summon), but he was so powerful that he, with
his summon, fought off all three Sannin. After their battle, he was so
impressed with their strength that he decided to leave them if they
agreed to accept the title of Konoha's Legendary Three Ninja (伝説の三忍,
Densetsu no Sannin). This makes him responsible for the naming of the
trio's title. Being capable of defeating all the three Sannin head-on,
Hanzo was easily a kage-level ninja. His power was such that Jiraiya
expressed intense shock upon hearing that Hanzo had been defeated by
Pain.[br]Hanzo's insecurities later got the better of him when a group
of ninja, lead by Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan began a quest to end war
through unorthodox means. He viewed these ninja as a threat to his
power, and sought to get rid of them. He then teamed up with the ANBU
Root's leader, Danzo, to kill the group's leader, Yahiko, in a
treacherous manner. He was later single-handedly killed by Pain (under
unknown circumstances). The hatred that Nagato had for him for being
responsible for Yahiko's death was so severe that he conducted a
systematic genocide on anybody even remotely associated with Hanzo
(with the exception of Danzo, who somehow escaped the carnage). While
Hanzo's abilities as a ninja are mostly unknown, Hanzo was easily one
of the strongest ninja of his time. His trademark ability was the
summoning of a giant salamander to aid him in battle. When battling
alongside his salamander, Hanzo was powerful enough to fight and
eventually overpower all three Sannin. During his attempt to kill
Nagato, Hanzo demonstrated impressive skill for trap-oriented
techniques, as he anticipated Nagato attacking him and had several
exploding tags prepared. * Hanzō may have been named after a famous
real-life samurai and possible ninja Hattori Hanzō.[br] * Hanzō's eyes
are very similar to Kakuzu's.[br] * According to the third Naruto
Databook, his favorites words are: "Security is the greatest enemy"

immediately quell them, solidifying their reputation and convincing
every country to depend on them, thus cornering the market in shinobi

Members do not automatically learn of the plan upon joining; Hidan
didn't find out about it until he had been a member for quite some time.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
The [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
nine gigantic demons of immense power, are the main focus of much of
Akatsuki's efforts and screentime within the series. Each member is
assigned to capture one of the nine beasts alive or, in most cases, the
person that beast has been sealed into.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Akatsuki has so far obtained and sealed seven of the nine:^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} the first through the seventh tailed beasts.
However, this plan may just be a ruse as Akatsuki's three most prominent members have separate goals in mind.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s Goal: Madara's plans for Akatsuki are yet to be revealed. However, since the early years of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], he has showed great interest in destroying it.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s Goal: Pain later goes into further detail on the tailed beasts' role in his plans. The beasts would be used to create a deadly [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
technique that could wipe out one of the five great nations in an
instant, so if countries go to war and do not have ninja villages to
fight for them, they would turn to Akatsuki and their "weapons."
Whichever side makes Pain use the technique first would wipe out the
opposing country, which would scare them into never using their weapon
again, and scare the other countries to never start a war or they would
be wiped out too. Through the mutual fear, war would cease to exist and
the world would know peace, until the people forget that fear and use
the weapon again. Thus the cycle would repeat, creating small periods
of peace in an endless chain of hatred.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Apparently, Pain and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] are the only Akatsuki members aware of this.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s Goal: After the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
and leaving Konoha, Itachi, instead of using the tailed beasts for his
own self-interest, continued to protect the village by joining Akatsuki
and keeping an eye on them, especially Sasuke, from the outside. During
his time in the group, Itachi would delay his own attempts to capture
the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
indirectly leaked information about the organization to Konoha, and
attempted to kill Madara through Sasuke. Before his death, Itachi gave [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
some of his "power," telling him to continue protecting Konoha and
Sasuke, should the event occur that Sasuke would plan for their
village's destruction. The "power" that Itachi gave to Naruto remains
unknown.

Nagato (長門), better known as Pain (ペイン, Pein), was the recognized leader of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and was a major antagonist in the series. Referred to as "Leader" by all Akatsuki members, except for [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
(who referred to him by his name) he directed the actions of the rest
of the members and maintained authority over them. However, he took
orders from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} who was actually [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], the benefactor of Akatsuki.
During one of the great shinobi wars in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
two Konoha shinobi broke into Nagato's house looking for food, thinking
that the house had been abandoned. His parents, believing they were
going to be killed, attacked the two strangers so Nagato could escape.
Thinking that they were enemy ninja, the Konoha shinobi killed Nagato's
parents, prompting Nagato to awaken his Rinnegan and dispose of the
intruders. He would come to consider this incident the first great pain

Having no-one left to call family, Nagato left his home after
burying his parents, and began wandering aimlessly with nothing but a
few supplies, along with meeting and befriending a stray dog, which he
named 'Chibi'. He later grouped up with fellow orphans, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and they looked after each other.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} One day, the three friends got caught in the crossfire of a battle between the Legendary [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
resulting in Chibi dying in Nagato's arms. This infuriated Yahiko, to
the point of declaring that he would become a god to stop all madness,
which eventually became Nagato's desire.
After the Great War ended, Nagato and his friends met the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], who at first were less than willing to help them. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] even suggested to kill them, as they were orphans of war, and as such would only live their lives full of misery. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], on the other hand, decided that he would take care of them, to compensate for what the Sannin did.
One night, at dinner, Nagato cried because eating together with
his master and friends reminded him of his family. Later that night, he
ran away with Yahiko. The two were attacked by an [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], who injured Yahiko. To his horror, Nagato activated his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and killed the ninja. When Jiraiya found out about this, he decided to train them in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Nagato was very emotional about killing the ninja, and asked Jiraiya
for help so he could protect Konan and Yahiko. Jiraiya's response was
for Nagato to grow up. He also revealed the truth behind Nagato's
Rinnegan: that his eyes might be the key to finding the peace they both
desired for the world. After three years, Jiraiya felt they were strong enough to
fend for themselves, so he began to head home. Jiraiya believed Nagato
to have later died with the other orphans under unexplained
circumstances,^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
but had told Konan that, whenever their names were mentioned outside
their village, it was always about someone being killed when they
opposed them.
In truth, Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko began a quest to find the
peace that they desired, just as Jiraiya had done. While becoming
full-fledged Rain ninja, they followed their own path, and began
gathering several supporters, with Yahiko as their leader.
Unfortunately, then [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] leader, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], viewed Yahiko's gang as a threat to his position as leader and schemed with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and Konoha's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to eliminate them. Luring Yahiko's group into a trap under the guise of three-way peace talks with the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
Hanzō took Konan hostage, and used her life as a bargaining chip to try
and force Nagato to kill Yahiko. Faced with a horrible decision, and
with both Konan and Yahiko showing their willingness to die for the
sake of the other, Nagato struggled with himself, until Yahiko
physically forced Nagato to kill him by placing the kunai in his hand
and guiding it. With Yahiko's dying breath, he told Nagato to survive,
because he believed in Jiraiya's words that Nagato would become the
world's saviour. This would become the second great pain of Nagato's
life.
After Yahiko's death, Hanzō ordered his shinobi to kill Nagato as well, but Nagato managed to unleash his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to repel their kunai. As Nagato rescued Konan, Hanzō captured him with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
severely burning his legs and hands in the resulting explosion.
However, Nagato continued to hold his ground, and returned Konan to
safety, telling her to take hold of Yahiko's body. Nagato then
performed [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
despite Konan's pleas, and used the Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming
Seal statue to decimate both Hanzō and Danzo's forces. The technique
didn't kill Hanzō and Danzo, as they were able to flee. However, it
left Nagato emaciated, with numerous chakra rods embedded in his back,
which, along with the injuries from the explosion, seemed to
necessitate his future use of a robotic transport. Leadership of the
gang passed on to Nagato as he scratched through the symbol of his
Amegakure forehead protector, presumably indicating both the origin of
the rebellion that would lead to civil war, and the beginning of his
teaching of enlightenment through pain.
Upon adopting the alias "Pain", Nagato led the rebelling forces
in the Amegakure civil war, and took control of the village by
assassinating Hanzō, then solidified his leadership by systematically
killing anyone who had direct ties to the former leader. Pain and his
faction then wore their forehead protectors with scratches through them
(a practice shared by the members of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]),
to symbolize their rebellion, and continued to wear them even after
gaining control of the country, despite no longer being labeled as [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], to symbolize their victory in the conflict.
Nagato was a sensitive but kind boy, prone to crying, and was
traumatized by the idea he had killed another man, even to save his
friend Yahiko. Scared and unsure of his place in the world, he desired
to help those he cared about, but never knew how. Nevertheless, he was
a talented and gifted student, mastering every technique Jiraiya had
taught him.
As Pain, his personality was very different, having become a
calm, serious, aloof, and detached man. Apparently believing traumas he
experienced in his youth had enlightened him to the true meaning of
pain and suffering, he considered himself a deity, and believed he had
evolved beyond a mere human being. He sought to show the world the
meaning of pain by using an ultimate weapon to deter future wars, by
means similar to "mutually assured destruction", and showed no moral
qualms about his actions. He was also willing to kill his own teacher, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], in cold blood, and brutally executed all of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s
friends and family to ensure Amegakure's compliance to his takeover. He
even went so far as to proclaim himself a "god of peace", that had to
guide the world to maturity through pain. Finally, he felt that no-one
could understand true peace unless they understood "true" pain,
something his childhood friend Yahiko believed. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] believed Madara Uchiha to have been using this philosophy in his favour, in order to manipulate Nagato.
Pain also held hatred for Konoha, because, during the war between [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
his parents died by the hands of two Konoha ninjas. Nagato's hatred was
quelled when he met Jiraiya, who gave him a new goal in life: to
protect his friends. However, when [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
teamed up with Hanzō and forced him to kill Yahiko, Nagato realized
that his goal was worthless, and hated Konoha even more, to the point
of losing his affections for Jiraiya.
Nonetheless, he was seen to be quite respectful, particularly
to the fallen and the dead. Given the Akatsuki members' frequent
bickering, he often restrained them, and encouraged better relations
among members. He even suggested that they mourn for [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] after his passing, and reprimanded [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for calling [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
the "Zombie Brothers". After his battle with Jiraiya, he held a moment
of silence for his former teacher, out of respect for his power.
Pain was also very respectful and kind to his childhood friend,
Konan, who he claimed to be his "angel" in Amegakure. He was shown
protecting her, without request or hesitation, from Jiraiya, before his
battle with his former teacher. Apparently, she was the only Akatsuki
member that addressed him by his names, Pain and Nagato.
As the leader of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and one of the two sides of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Civil War, Nagato was an extraordinarily powerful shinobi, who could easily be considered to be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]-level, maybe even higher. His partner, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
had stated that he had never lost a single battle, but it wasn't until
his fight with Naruto that he encountered an opponent capable of
defeating him.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} He was also able to single-handedly defeat and overthrow the former Amegakure leader, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and made short work of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
after unveiling all six of his bodies (though he admitted that killing
Jiraiya would have been very unlikely had Jiraiya had prior knowledge
of his six separate bodies).
Nagato's incredible power stemmed mainly from his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. This was originally possessed by the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], the world's first ninja, and the founder of modern [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. The Rinnegan's abilities were largely unknown, but it did permit the user to use all types of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
and allowed Nagato to master every technique Jiraiya taught him. It
also enhanced his vision of chakra in a similar manner to the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
allowing him to see the chakra of barrier techniques around the
perimeter of his location, and the chakra gathered at a shinobi's feet.

Nagato's most powerful and most used technique was the Six Paths of Pain (ペイン六道, Pein Rikudō).
This technique allowed Nagato to control six separate bodies as though
they were his own. Each of these bodies were reanimated corpses that
were both kept mobile by and made use of Nagato's chakra. While
controlling them, Nagato used the alias "Pain", yet still regarded them
as separate entities from himself.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
In order to use the technique, Nagato remained in a machine,
that moved with six relatively small mechanical legs, and used several
large [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
on his back to transmit chakra. From that point, the chakra was picked
up by the numerous receivers, modelled as body piercings on each body.
To control them, Nagato had to be close by, and ideally at the highest
possible point, so he could have the best possible range.
Based on the six Buddhist paths of Reincarnation, each body was
named after the one of the different "paths": Deva, Asura, Human,
Animal, Preta, and Naraka. The only common feature shared by these
bodies was their bright orange hair and Rinnegan eyes. Each also had a
vast number of body and facial piercings of various shapes, sizes, and
patterns. Each body seemed to serve a specific purpose in battle, such
as summoning, repairing, and defensive capabilities.

In Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho Character Official Data Book,
Kishimoto briefly explained the philosophy behind Pain's design,
stating, "He's Akatsuki's leader, so he has to look fairly cool, but I
still wanted him to look dangerous. Since his name is "Pain", I decided
to add some piercings to his body, like he's the kind of guy who would
inflict pain upon himself." Notable among the few unused concept
designs is a small sketch in which he appears to wear a partial face
mask and feather, or horn-like accessories fitted to his forehead
protector.
When first appearing in the anime and other media, Pain's eyes
were depicted with an incorrect color scheme; the two center rings of
the Rinnegan were colored separate shades of grey, while the outermost
ring was flesh-colored, and the ring in between was white. Following
his appearance in chapter 377 of the manga, which featured the first
official color illustration of his face, the color scheme was
corrected.
In its first partial appearance in the Shippūden anime,
while in Amegakure, Pain's Deva path was shown to have a pale, greyish
skin tone, while, in the official manga illustrations, it has a regular
skin-colored tone. This color mistake in the anime was later corrected
in Shippūden episode 114.
Several of Nagato's abilities were inspired by Buddhist beliefs
and terminology, and he taught that enlightenment was reached through
experiencing and understanding pain and suffering, similar to a path
the Buddha took but then later rejected.

Konan (小南) was the only female ninja in Akatsuki, and the only member to call her partner, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], by his name. She is now the current leader of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
When she was younger, Konan's family was killed during the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and she was left to fend for herself.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Some time later, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] found her, and the two worked together to survive. Not long after that, Konan went for a walk and found a young dying [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and his dog, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
She then rescued Nagato and brought him back to Yahiko's hideout, hence
becoming close friends. The three eventually encountered the three [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
who gave them some food. Konan impressed them by making an elaborate
flower out of the paper wrappers left behind (she also wears one in her
hair). [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] taught them [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and, once confident they could take care of themselves, left them on their own.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Over time, the three formed a larger group and became renowned
for their strength and effectiveness, with news of their actions even
reaching Jiraiya. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], leader of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], feared that they would overthrow him. As such, he and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
deceived the group into meeting with them about an allegiance for
peace. When Nagato and Yahiko went to meet with them, they kidnapped
Konan and ordered Nagato to kill Yahiko in exchange for her life. Konan
cried out for them to flee without her, but they refused to leave her
behind. Although Nagato was paralyzed in shock by the order, Yahiko
impaled himself on a kunai in Nagato's hand. Nagato saved Konan
afterwards, who would thereafter accompany him wherever he went.

Konan is stoic, calm, and level-headed (much like her partner,
Nagato, was). As a child, she was bright, compassionate, and relatively
cheerful, in comparison to Yahiko's tough attitude and Nagato's
sensitivity. However, the trauma of events since then have led her to
become a very serious person, and she rarely spoke during Akatsuki
meetings. Nevertheless, she has always placed the safety of her
teammates above her own.
She does seem to be more empathic than most other Akatsuki
members, as she appears sad whenever she has been reminded of her past.
She also expressed a great deal of loyalty and courtesy to Pain (which
he always returned), doing his bidding without question, looking out
for his well-being and always having complete faith in his abilities.
She seemed to act as an intermediary between Pain and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
the villagers having given her the title "God's Angel" for this reason,
and for the reason that, with her paper wings activated, she looks like
an angel.
She had the ability to read Pain's emotions without him
facially expressing them, presumably as a result of having known him
for so long. As soon as [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ordered [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to capture the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], she could tell right away that there was something about the order that very much upset her emotionally deadened partner.
Konan is a kunoichi of great prowess, and her skills were held in high regard by her partner, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Jiraiya held her off with relative ease, but, with his capabilities, it
was to be expected somewhat. She has an amazing natural talent for
origami,^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
as seen with the paper flower she keeps in her hair. As a child, after
training with Jiraiya, she was able to form paper weapons infused with
her chakra. As an adult and former member of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], her abilities have grown considerably. She has created a unique transformation technique called [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
which can turn her entire body and clothing into thousands of sheets of
paper, which she can control at will and form into any shape. To travel
long distances, she can mould them into butterflies or planes for
powered flight, and, to attack, the sheets can form arrows, shuriken,
or kunai. She can also restrain opponents by blanketing them in sheets,
thus restricting their movement. Befitting (and likely inspiring) her
title as "Angel" (天使, Tenshi), the papers can also form large
wings for flight or further weaponry. Konan is susceptible to oil-based
attacks, which stick to her and keep her paper form from unfolding,
although she is not hampered to the same extent by water, as shown when
Pain had his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
on her to wash the oil off, as well as when she was shown fighting in
the rain during flashbacks. Her paper, however, is also vulnerable to
fire jutsu.
Konan has been shown to be able to fold paper to mimic
environmental surroundings, allowing her and those of her choosing to
hide in places one normally wouldn't be able to.
In Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho Character Official Data Book,
Kishimoto revealed that he'd always planned for Konan to be the only
female member of Akatsuki, and, for that reason, gave her quite a
revealing design. He jokingly comments that "she's obscene, but she
still wears clothes, although her Akatsuki mantle covers it up, and she
turns into paper right away". In the concept artwork, her navel is also
shown to be pierced.

• Even though she is an Akatsuki member, Konan (like Pain) is not a missing-nin, since their faction achieved victory in the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] civil wars.
  
• She is the only Akatsuki member who has yet to be heard talking in the anime.

  hints in the manga. In the anime, her eyes are depicted as a deep shade

Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara), who posed as Tobi^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} (トビ) when first introduced, is a founder of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and the former leader of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. When he joined Akatsuki as Tobi (replacing [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]), he was partnered with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], revealing himself as Madara after Deidara's death. He has been recognized by [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] as once being the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], although it is unknown when.
Decades before the start of the series, Madara grew up in constant competition with his younger brother, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], who were both known as the most gifted members of their clan. Their competition led to both gaining the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and, with it, they were able to take control of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
Madara acting as its leader. Even by his clan's standards, Madara's
chakra was unusually strong. Under his leadership, the clan conquered
all they came across, but, over time, he began to lose his sight
because of the Mangekyo Sharingan. To regain his vision, he took his
brother's eyes (an act Madara said his brother had consented to),
allowing him to continue to lead the Uchiha to prosperity.
In the years that followed, the Uchiha constantly clashed with the equally powerful [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. To bring an end to the constant fighting, the leader of the Senju, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
approached Madara with an offering of peace. Although Madara never
wanted peace with the Senju, the rest of the Uchiha wanted to end the
fighting, and Madara had no choice but to go along with their decision.
The Senju, the Uchiha, and all the clans they had conquered came
together to form the village of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Against Madara's wishes, the villagers selected Hashirama as the village's First [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Madara feared that Hashirama would oppress the Uchiha, and tried to
rally support for challenging his leadership. Rather than help him,
however, the Uchiha turned their backs on him, believing his only
motive was greed.

Madara's statue at the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].



Abandoned by his clan, Madara left the village so that he could
return to challenge Hashirama in battle. They fought at the site that
would someday be called the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], where, although Madara called upon the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], he was defeated, and was believed to have died. Madara faded into memory, and, in time, would found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and become [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Twelve years before the start of the series, the Nine-Tails
attacked Konoha. Although Madara denied having had any involvement in
the attack, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
said that the Nine-Tails was under Madara's control at the time. A few
years later, he infiltrated Konoha to try and rekindle the flames of
war. He was found by Itachi first, who convinced Madara to spare the
village in exchange for helping to wipe out the Uchiha clan for
deserting him decades earlier. Madara complied, training Itachi and
providing assistance. Itachi never truly trusted Madara, however, and
kept an eye on him for the rest of his life. To keep in Akatsuki's shadow, Madara eventually took on the disguise of Tobi,^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} giving orders to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
in secret. He wears an orange, swirl-patterned mask that reveals only
his right eye. When he trained Itachi, he wore a slightly different
mask with black swirl-like patterns on it, and his hair was cut a
little shorter. His hair is cut down completely from the days of
Konoha's founding, and he wears a uniform consisting of a number of
bolts and pins, which is usually concealed by his Akatsuki cloak.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
While acting as Tobi, he is carefree and goofy, something that
annoys most of the other members. Deidara, who believed all within
Akatsuki should be serious and calm, was not pleased with Tobi's
childish personality, and frequently attacked the latter in a comedic
fashion when annoyed. Apparently, Madara is very committed to keeping
his identity secret, as he has been seen keeping up his goofy
appearance even when no-one was around (at least during the anime's
filler arc). [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], on the other hand, somewhat appreciate Tobi's ability to brighten up a gloomy organization such as theirs.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}Madara exhibits a very calm and serious personality. He speaks with
less formal diction, such as not using honorifics. He spoke down to
Pain (going so far as to refer to him as a "minion"). He has great
faith in his own abilities, to the point of acting arrogant on
occassion, only acting polite to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
He will abandon his normal personality in favor of the Tobi personality
when the situation calls for it, as he did when distracting a group of
Konoha ninja. He is also well-versed in rhetoric and is capable of
gaining others' trust without revealing his goals to them.
Madara has shown great ability in manipulating others to do his
work for him. Minato believed that he was using Pain's ideology against
him in order to control him. He similarly befriended Sasuke in order to
get him to join Akatsuki by telling him about Itachi's past, even
though he has an apparent interest in Sasuke and his abilities. While
Akatsuki's goal to gain the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is believed by most of the members to be a step in gaining control over the world, Madara's intentions have yet to be revealed.

Most of Madara's abilities are still unknown. He is thought to be
the strongest Uchiha to ever live, and one of the most gifted ninja in
history. He was described as a "very powerful ninja" by Minato Namikaze
himself. He has also been noted to have been born with particularly
powerful chakra, which he states is the reason for his "stubborn
refusal to die". Even the Nine-Tails mentioned that Madara's chakra is
even more sinister than its own. One of the abilities he has actually
displayed is his speed, which, as Tobi, was apparently his only claim
to fame. To that end, Kisame commented "he is a good runner". Madara
also appears to have immense strength, as he was able to stop a slash
from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s giant sword with a single arm.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
He was armed with a giant kusarigama war fan attached to it
during the time of Konoha's founding, fitting with his clan's name,
which means "paper fan". He is also said to have been able to summon
the Nine-Tails. It is unclear if this referred to the use of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or if he could produce enough human malice to bring it to his location.
During Itachi's fight with Sasuke, it was revealed that Madara Uchiha and his younger brother, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], were the first members of the Uchiha to activate the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
and used its power to take over the clan. After implanting his
brother's eyes into his own body, Madara then awakened a new "Eternal"
Mangekyo Sharingan, a combination of his own and Izuna's Mangekyo
Sharingan which led to him acquiring immortality. With it, Madara never
had to fear the risk of losing his eyesight again. Madara's knowledge
and mastery of this powerful Dojutsu allowed him to fight on par with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and also gave him the power to forcibly subdue the Nine-Tails.

Madara shows the ability to recover from debilitating or even fatal
blows. After being slashed across the midsection by Sasuke's sword, he
collapsed, only to stand up again a few seconds later and complain
about the speed of the attack.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} The same things occured when [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] hit him in the back with a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], where the attack literally phased through him, avoiding damage.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} His ability's consistency is confirmed when Sasuke attempted a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on him, and, as predicted, he phased through Madara as Naruto had done earlier.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Madara also shows the ability to travel long distances within
relatively short timespans, escaping the final explosion created by
Deidara and reappearing in Amegakure within a very short period. It was
speculated by Kakashi that he uses time/space Ninjutsu to instantly
send himself or even parts of his body to different locations or some
sort of void and then instantly bring them back. It is revealed that
Madara can find the exact location of a person and warp himself to that
place, stating that it is in his power.

Zetsu (ゼツ) is a member of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] who functions as the organization's spy.
Zetsu is easily distinguished by two large venus fly trap-like
extensions that envelop his head and upper body, giving him a
plant-like appearance. When his extensions are open and his head is
visible, it is revealed that Zetsu has two different colored halves of
his body, the left side completely white and the right side black. To
go with this, Zetsu seems to have a split personality, as in the
Japanese version of the manga the black half of his face speaks only in
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] while the white side uses [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
and in the English episodes the black side has a different voice actor
than the white side. The two halves also converse with each other, and
occasionally differ in opinion (the black half is more serious and
intelligent while the white half is carefree and easygoing).^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
They also seem to communicate through their thoughts. He also has
unusual teeth. To further his venus fly trap theme, Zetsu is a
cannibal.
Zetsu is seemingly very trustworthy, being entrusted with knowledge of Pain and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s
true identities. He has apparently been working with the latter for
some time, Tobi first appearing as his "subordinate" and Zetsu later
commenting that Tobi's plans had been in the works for a long time.
Zetsu's main role within the Akatsuki is to function as a spy, often acting as a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for Akatsuki. He has been shown able to move his body and take part in the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
sealing ritual simultaneously which, in addition to being unique to
him, allows him to act as a lookout while the sealing takes place.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
When an agent to Akatsuki, or possibly even a member, dies, Zetsu is
sent to devour their bodies so as to not have their secrets revealed.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Zetsu is also the one sent to retrieve the rings of dead Akatsuki members.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Due to the role he plays, Zetsu is the only member of Akatsuki to act
without a partner on a regular basis. Despite this, Zetsu serves as a
sort of superior to other members, as they often reported directly to
him instead of to the actual leader, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}Zetsu appears frequently throughout the series. In addition to serving
his various Akatsuki duties, he watches battles of interest and then
reports the outcome to the other members.
Zetsu has yet to be seen in battle. The only technique he has been shown using is his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
technique, with which he merges with the ground to instantly travel to
a new location. It has also been noted that Zetsu has the ability to
"record" the things he sees. After the battle with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
asked him, "Did you make sure to record the whole thing while you
watched?" to which Zetsu replied, "Relax, I got everything." It is
unknown how he is able to show these "recordings". Zetsu has also shown the ability to split into two, so that his two personalities can act independently.
In Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho Character Official Data Book,
Kishimoto revealed that he had originally planned for Akatsuki to be a
group of monsters, "with almost no human characteristics", and that
Zetsu's design was modelled after an insectivorous plant. He also
stated that he had decided to make Zetsu half black and half white to
"better show his split personality".

Kisame is a former member of Kirigakure's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], an ever-changing group of ninja that wield particularly large weapons in battle.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} While in Kiri, Kisame was given the title of "Monster of the Hidden Mist". He is also known to have formed a connection to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. His former country, the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
now seek him out, for plotting to overthrow its government and being
involved in numerous assassinations, including one of a feudal lord of
an unknown country.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Kisame later joined [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and was partnered with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] stated that his reason for joining Akatsuki was "spite".
Kisame is a very tall and strong shinobi, with a distinctive shark-like
appearance, complete with pale blue skin, small white eyes, gill-like
facial structures, and sharp triangular teeth. Even his name, Kisame
(鬼鮫), means "Demon Shark". Kisame also wears a dark purple nail color,

Kisame is rather battle-loving, enjoying to fight with others.
However, Kisame is usually forced to leave a fight, being paired with
Itachi (who only fights when necessary). When this happens, he has been
known to inform his opponent(s) that they "don't know how lucky they
are." Like other characters who have trained to be one of the Seven
Ninja Swordsmen, Kisame enjoys mutilating his opponents, as seen when
he suggested cutting off [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s legs to make him easier to carry, and to prevent the latter from escaping on foot.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Kisame is one of the few members of Akatsuki that got along well
with his partner. Kisame was very loyal to Itachi, willing to take any
commands he was given without question, and constantly looked out for
his well-being. Although Kisame does have his pride, he acknowledged
Itachi as the stronger of the duo. Madara has noted that, out of all of
Akatsuki, Kisame was the closest to Itachi, implying that they were
indeed good friends. Ever since their first encounter he has had a deep
loathing for Might Guy, since Guy seems to continue to agitate him by
not remembering who Kisame is.
Kisame is said to be the strongest of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the
Mist. He has been seen displaying astonishing speed and incredible
physical strength. At one point, Guy battled a clone of Kisame's with
30% chakra-supply, and Guy was forced to open his Sixth Chakra Gate in
order to survive. He also managed to overpower another melee-weapon
user, Asuma. Using only the tip of Samehada (wielded with one hand),
against Asuma's two blades which he held overhead using his body as
extra support. Kisame himself proved powerful enough to successfully
capture the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], despite noting his target's exceptional powers.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Though a difficult task, by his own admission, Kisame merely complained that he was "a bit tired"Kisame's weapon is called [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
a sentient, scale-covered sword, that shaves skin instead of cutting
it. Samehada is also capable of absorbing chakra, but requires Kisame's
own chakra to perform such a feat. Only Kisame is able to wield
Samehada;^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} if anyone besides him tries to pick it up, spikes protrude from its handle, and it returns to Kisame's side.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} It was stated by Suigetsu that, if he kills Kisame, he would be able to wield the Samehada, but it is unknown if this is true.
Kisame has the largest chakra reserve in all of Akatsuki (according to Pain). [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], upon sensing Kisame, stated she had never seen so much chakra in one place. Even when he fought at 30% power in one instance,^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} his chakra supply is compared to that of a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]-enhanced Naruto Uzumaki during the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Itachi Uchiha (うちはイタチ, Uchiha Itachi) was [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s older brother. He was a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and a prominent member of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], partnered with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Itachi was born into the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
and was praised by all as the best of his generation - a genius above
all others. Even by the standards of the battle-adept Uchiha clan,
Itachi's prowess far outshined all others. However, not even his
family, friends, or teachers could understand him. When he was only 4,
Itachi had already witnessed countless lives lost due to the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which emotionally traumatized him and turned him into a pacifist. At age 7, he graduated from the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] at the top of his class after only one year, mastered the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] at age 8, passed the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] at age 10, and became [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Captain at age 13. According to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], Itachi also had a lover, whom he killed during the Uchiha clan massacre.He was praised highly by his father, who saw the family's future in
Itachi, hence neglecting his other son - Itachi's younger brother,
Sasuke. However, during this time Itachi showed great affection towards
his little brother, Sasuke, and even encouraged his father to come to
the Academy when Sasuke was enrolled, something their dad had otherwise
forgotten, by saying that he would not go to an important mission, that
would establish Itachi a place in the ANBU ranks, otherwise.
When the Uchiha began planning to overthrow Konoha, Itachi, as
an ANBU, was tasked with spying on the village. Knowing that a coup
d'etat would only lead to another Ninja War, Itachi began spying on the
Uchiha instead, passing on information to the Third Hokage and the
other Konoha elders. After this he began to act strangely, not
attending the clan meetings, speaking out against the clan, and
becoming the prime suspect for the murder of his best friend, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
The clan lost hope in Itachi, and his father began shifting his focus
to Sasuke instead. Meanwhile, the Third's attempts to negotiate a
bloodless end to hostilities between the two parties were proving
ineffective, so, against the Third's wishes, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ordered Itachi to wipe out the Uchiha.
Before the fateful night arrived, Itachi discovered the existence of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
who was attempting to rekindle the flames of war in Konoha. In return
for not attacking Konoha, Itachi offered to help Madara claim vengeance
against the Uchiha for turning their backs on him decades earlier.
Madara agreed. Itachi slaughtered his entire clan overnight, sparing
only Sasuke. Sasuke's life was worth more than the village to Itachi,
and he could not follow through with the orders to kill him as well.
Instead, he made himself out as a villain, who had killed their
innocent family only to test his abilities. By doing so, he wanted
Sasuke to take vengeance on him and become a hero to Konoha, thus
redeeming the Uchiha name. He tortured Sasuke with his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
and encouraged him to become strong enough to kill him and avenge their
family. Hoping that his beloved little brother would someday be
powerful enough to kill him, Itachi left the village as a traitor.
Knowing that Konoha would still want to eliminate Sasuke, Itachi pleaded with the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
to keep Sasuke safe. He also threatened Danzo to not harm Sasuke or
risk him revealing everything he knew about Konoha's secrets to enemy
countries. Sasuke's safety was therefore secured, and Itachi returned
to his original plan of becoming infamous for his slaughter of the
Uchiha. Itachi joined [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
in order to keep an eye on the organization, along with Madara Uchiha,
in case either ever acted against Konoha, all the while planning for
his death at Sasuke's hands. While a member of Akatsuki, Itachi was
approached by [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
who tried to steal his body to gain the Sharingan. Itachi trapped him
in a genjutsu and severed his left hand as punishment, forcing
Orochimaru to flee the organization. Sometime after joining Akatsuki,
Itachi later helped recruit [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], Orochimaru's replacement, by beating him in battle, after which Deidara swore vengeance against Itachi.
Ever since his first appearance, Itachi had always been mysterious,
and had acted as though he was hiding his true self. While flashbacks
to his past showed that he was a compassionate brother and person, his
later acts and claims made it seem that this was mostly just an act.
But, surprisingly, he genuinely was the compassionate brother he had
once claimed to be, although he hid this from the rest of the Akatsuki
to protect Sasuke. As a member of Akatsuki, he possessed incredible self-control
of his emotions. He constantly displayed an emotionless personality. He
only showed surprise when opponents proved more powerful or skilled
than he had expected, and even then he didn't lose his composure. He
did not possess any arrogance, and fully justified any statements he
made about his power, even complimenting his opponents at times on
their abilities. In addition to being an extremely powerful ninja, Itachi had
equally impressive intelligence, and was shown to be very wise. He was
exceedingly sharp and observant to any situation at hand, as he was
rarely surprised or caught off guard. He also displayed great
intuition, as he was almost never deceived and even then almost
instantly realized the truth. Despite his status as a wanted criminal,
and having murdered a significant portion of his family, Itachi took no
enjoyment in violence or combat, instead preferring to avoid battle or,
if this was not possible, end it as quickly as he could.
Itachi's only initial interest was in Akatsuki's goals, and his
only loyalties appeared to be to the organization and its members,
seeming to put the organization's success and secrecy before everything

As such, Itachi got along with his partner, Kisame, much better than
most other Akatsuki members did with their own partners. Kisame
appeared to have a deep loyalty to Itachi, immediately doing as he
instructed and constantly looking out for his well-being. Itachi
treated all of his fellow Akatsuki members to this same, more
respectful personality, although his courtesy was rarely returned by
the other members.
However, when he was in a genjutsu duel during his fight with
Sasuke, he cruelly claimed he had only let Sasuke live so that he could
take Sasuke's eyes and obtain his own Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, after
which he then claimed the Uchiha clan had been nothing but tainted and
evil, since many members would kill their friends to gain the Mangekyo
Sharingan, and would take another Uchiha's eyes to make its power
permanent. Once the genjutsu was released, he called it his true self,
implying his calm, emotionless personality was also a facade. This
persona was later revealed to be only an act to ensure that he would
die by Sasuke's hands, his love for his younger brother being the
fundamental aspect of his personality.

Despite his status as an infamous shinobi, his appearance was not
the most intimidating, apart from the intensity of his eyes. While
living in Konoha, he would regularly have a gentle and caring look in
his eyes, especially directed towards his younger brother. After
joining Akatsuki, he would regularly have a stern look to them. He was
a fairly tall shinobi, whose basic appearance was very much like the
rest of his clan. He, like all members of his clan, possessed dark grey eyes,
and also had black hair that hung near his cheeks to frame his face. He
also had the addition of a long ponytail in the back of his hair (which
he obscured with his Akatsuki cloak after joining the organization).
Being brothers, Itachi and Sasuke had a similar appearance, but with
subtle differences. Itachi's hair color appeared slightly duller and
with a softer flow to it, without the spiky style at the back. His skin
was also slightly darker. Itachi's most distinguishing characteristics
were the long pronounced creases under his eyes.
When he lived in Konoha, his casual clothes would consist of a
black shirt with a large Uchiha clan symbol on the back of it, and
black pants with a weapons pouch strapped to them. When on duty, he
would wear the traditional ANBU uniform, although he was never shown
wearing a mask. As a member of Akatsuki, he wore the traditional
Akatsuki cloak, and usually kept the center of it buttoned down. After
his cloak was incinerated by Sasuke's Kirin during their fight in Part
II, it was revealed that he still wore his casual clothes underneath
it. Like almost all members of Akatsuki, he wore the headband of his
home village, Konoha, with a line gouged through it, to symbolize his
broken ties with the village (although, secretly, he was actually still
loyal to his village).

Madara collected Sasuke, attended to his wounds, and tried to
befriend him when he woke up. When he removed his mask while doing the
latter, Sasuke cast an Amaterasu on him. After quelling the flames,
Madara explained that the Amaterasu had been inserted in Sasuke by
Itachi, intended to protect him from Madara and whatever he might say.
Sasuke was perplexed, so Madara went onto details of the history of the
Uchiha clan, and the truth behind Itachi's life. Towards the end of his
story, he explained that Itachi had been dying of disease, but had kept
himself going with medicine so that he could die by Sasuke's hands.
Stating if Itachi had battled with all his strength they wouldn't be
having that conversation. He also stated that Itachi had pushed Sasuke
to his limits during their battle to draw out Orochimaru, so that he
could remove the latter's influence from his beloved little brother.
Sasuke was unwilling to believe the story. Madara persisted,
saying that Itachi had entrusted the Uchiha name to Sasuke, hoping he
would rebuild the clan on a new foundation of honor and nobility. For
the sake of Konoha, and for Sasuke, he had been willing to die as a
traitor and criminal. He had traded honor for disgrace and Sasuke's
love for his hatred, and even then he had died smiling. Finally
accepting the truth, Sasuke was crushed to find that the brother he had
hated for so long had actually been looking out for him all along. Upon
realizing the truth, he resolved to take vengeance against Konoha for
the massacre of his clan and the fate they placed on his brother,
regardless of Itachi's attachment to the village. He also agreed to
start working with Madara, something Itachi had tried to prevent.
Since a young age, Itachi's intellect and talent showed their
brilliance in everything he did, as even his teachers said his progress
hardly required any help. In the few battles he had been seen in since
the start of the series, Itachi was shown to be an incredibly powerful
ninja, and easily one of the strongest in the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], as demonstrated by his ability to easily defeat [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
(twice), who themselves are considered amongst the strongest ninjas in
Naruto. Being a pacifist, Itachi did not actively take part in battle,
typically only acting in self-defense.

When battling against Kakashi, Kurenai, and Asuma, Kakashi commented
that Itachi wasn't fighting with even half of his strength.
Itachi was also noted to be very fast, particularly with his hand movements. This extended to weaving [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
and throwing weapons, as he was able to reveal a set of shurikens with
one hand and then suddenly attack the opponent with a form of Ninjutsu.
His speed was such that neither Sasuke nor Kakashi (Sharingan users)
could follow his movements in either case. Despite his extensive use of
genjutsu, Itachi appeared to be quite skilled in taijutsu as well, as
demonstrated when he stopped Sasuke's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
with one hand and brutally beat the latter during their reunion in
Konoha. Itachi's techniques also often involved usage of crows, both in
ninjutsu and genjutsu.

activation of the Mangekyo Sharingan, and he would eventually go blind

When still a loyal elite ninja to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], Kakuzu took on a mission to assassinate [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], the First Hokage. This mission, however, ended in failure before the might of Hashirama's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
jutsu. Despite the insurmountable danger faced in the mission, what
awaited his return to his village was the stigma and harsh punishment
associated with failure of his objective. In response to this
treatment, a wrong levied against a shinobi who had put life and limb
on the line for his village, Kakuzu came to hold a violent hatred to
his village as he escaped from imprisonment. In his flight from the
village, Kakuzu killed the village elders, took their hearts, and fled
with knowledge of the village's most prized forbidden techniques.

Kakuzu was a greedy, miserly individual, arranging goals in terms of
the highest profit he could gain from them, and was often unwilling to
involve himself in something unless there was something to gain. He
even remarked that money is the only dependable thing in the world. Due
to this end, he referred to himself as the "Treasurer of Akatsuki".
Given his friendly relationship with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
his bounty officer, it would seem he collected bounties rather
frequently to earn cash, and did so (or at least tried) during his
missions on several occasions. The frequent side-tasks and devotion to
money were both major points of contention between Hidan and Kakuzu. He
also seemed to respect an opponent who thinks, as shown with his
reaction to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s counters to Kakuzu's masks, and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s quick analysis of Hidan's curse, even mentioning Shikamaru would have been a good bounty in the future.
Out of all the Akatsuki members, Hidan and Kakuzu displayed the
most animosity towards each other, since neither of them were very fond
of each other's interests. The two often traded barbs with one another,
Kakuzu's usually having better timing than Hidan's. Hidan had shown
great annoyance with Kakuzu's greed and occasional habit of doing or
saying blasphemous things, such as attacking a temple and killing the
head monk for the bounty on the monk's head. Kakuzu, in turn, disliked
Hidan's religion, believing the rituals associated with it to be a
waste of time. Kakuzu was also rather impatient with Hidan's drawn-out
speeches and battle style.
The only reason that Kakuzu put up with Hidan was because he
couldn't get rid of him. Due to his violent temper, Kakuzu often killed
anyone close by when enraged. Hidan, therefore, was the perfect partner
for Kakuzu, because of Hidan's inability to die. Kakuzu's somewhat
indiscriminate attack style also made Hidan an ideal partner, since
Kakuzu didn't need to worry about catching his partner in the
crossfire.
Despite his obsessive personality and violent rages, Kakuzu was
much more cautious than his partner, and was not as arrogant, never
mindlessly rushing into battle like Hidan. Kakuzu frequently warned
Hidan not to let his guard down, and then teased Hidan when he
inevitably did. Kakuzu apparently seemed quite willing to follow
orders. When ordered to retreat by the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
Kakuzu complied immediately (while Hidan attempted to argue), despite
the rather large bounty he could have received by taking [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. He seemed to forget the greater goals of the organization when enraged, as he attempted to kill [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], in spite of Akatsuki's need to capture all the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] alive.
Kakuzu was a very powerful ninja, as every opponent he had been seen
fighting had been defeated with little effort. His raw strength was
great enough to catch one of Choji's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
with a single hand and punch down an iron gate, as well as lifting and
choking two people simultaneously. This was further supplemented by his
taijutsu skills, shown when, during his fight with Kakashi (who was
quite skilled in taijutsu himself) he mixed his hardening and extending
abilities with his taijutsu.
Kakuzu was shown to be a keen analyst as well, which was
somewhat attributable to his age. In the anime, he seemed somewhat more
observant, easily noticing that Shikamaru was taking his time to
formulate a plan to counter Hidan's technique, after the former caught
his partner in his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
He was able to quickly discern the purpose of Shikamaru's various
shadow attacks, and devised ways to counter them almost instantaneously
during the battle.
All of Kakuzu's abilities revolved around his unique body structure,
which was composed of hundreds of thick, dark grey threads woven
throughout his flesh called [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
holding his body together like the stitches of a rag-doll. This allowed
him to separate his body parts at will, to perform long-range physical
attacks, and sew up almost any injury he suffered, making him very
difficult to defeat. The threads could also be used to repair the
bodies of others, as seen when he reattached [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s
arms, although Hidan's inability to die after being dismembered caused
him to be Kakuzu's most frequent patient. His threads could even
compact together to form a giant octopus-like form around his body.
Kakuzu's threads granted him a degree of immortality (though he
declined to think of it that way). The threads could pierce the flesh
and bodies of others, allowing him to remove their organs and integrate
them into his own body, thereby extending his life. He commonly removed
hearts in this fashion, keeping a total of five at any time, and
requiring that he be killed at least five times in a battle before he
truly died.

The hearts captured from other ninja granted Kakuzu numerous
elemental affinities, along with a vast supply of chakra. The raw power
of each element Kakuzu demonstrated even made Kakashi, who is also
capable of multiple elements, stiff with awe. The individual hearts
could be released from his body and wrapped in a vast blanket of
threads, forcing a heart into a limb before being detached or forming a
monstrous body with a mask as its face. These masks could move and
attack independently, unleashing powerful blasts of elemental chakra
from their mouths.

• Earth mask (light blue): It is unknown what animal this
  mask was, as it was destroyed before it could be seen, but the heart
  had an earth-affinity. It allowed Kakuzu to use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  
• Tiger-like mask (red): This heart had a fire-affinity, and it took on the shape of a demonic tiger. It could use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. This mask could also unite with the Eagle-mask to launch a fire-wind dual strike, that was near unstoppable.
  
• Bull-like mask (yellow): This heart had a lightning-affinity, and it took on the shape of some sort of deformed bipedal. It could use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  
• Eagle-like mask (blue): This heart had a wind-affinity, and it took on a strange, four-legged body, with thin wings. It could use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. It could unite with the Tiger-mask to launch a fire-wind dual strike, that was near unstoppable.
  
• Water: In the anime, using the fifth heart stored in
  his body, Kakuzu could use water-based jutsu. Kakuzu used Water

After it deteriorated from a shinobi village to a tourist site, Hidan
became infuriated with how things were turning out. He believed that
the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
that resided there were meant to kill, and thus slaughtered his
neighbors before leaving Yugakure, and joining the cult-like faith
known as [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
a religion that worshipped a deity of the same name. The primary
teaching of this faith appears to be outright slaughter, where anything
less than utter destruction is considered a sin.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
The amulet around his neck was a symbol of Jashin, and he used it to
pray to his god before battling, requesting a good kill, or (when he
was not allowed to) for forgiveness.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Eventually, he joined Akatsuki, and was partnered with Kakuzu. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] stated that his reason for joining [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] was "religion".
Hidan was one of the most foul-mouthed, disrespectful characters in
the series; he frequently cursed and complained at allies and opponents
alike. He rarely used honorifics when speaking, and, even then, usually
as a form of sarcasm. He was the only member of Akatsuki who did not
respect their leader, Pain, and openly declared his willingness to kill
him around others. The only respect he ever seemed to give was to his
god, and, even then, he was quite willing to use his name as an insult.
He openly held his partner, Kakuzu, in contempt for his habit of
blasphemy, love of money, and Kakuzu's frequent ridicule of Hidan's
religion and battle style. Despite this, whenever Hidan was in the mood
to kill, the two worked together flawlessly in battle, and one can
infer that he did care somewhat for his partner, from his panicked
reaction when he almost killed Kakuzu while being possessed by
Shikamaru's technique.
Hidan had absolutely no moral restraints regarding the people
he killed; he considered slaughter a religious calling, and often took
considerable pleasure in making his opponents' deaths as painful as
possible. Given the requirements of his voodoo-like curse ritual, he
was quite willing to inflict pain and injuries on himself, and openly
relished the shared pain between him and the cursed victim. Despite
this, he reacted "normally" (that is, he didn't enjoy the pain) to
being injured by someone else, or when the opponent didn't share the
pain.
Hidan was shown to be a sadomasochist, particularly during his
ceremony, taking sincere pleasure in the pain he caused his victims and
himself. His behavior in the anime bordered on insanity; he was
frequently heard shrieking loudly while attacking, and laughed
maniacally when he was about to kill [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Hidan also appeared to be quite spiteful towards his enemies (and nearly everyone else), even commenting to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] that "I've been waiting for this" ("this" referring to using his ceremony to kill Shikamaru).
However, his immortality had made him arrogant (though not quite
stupid), and he frequently engaged opponents with no regard for
strategy, save to acquire some of their blood. Although ridiculed for
his foolishness by Kakuzu and Shikamaru alike, and being obviously
inferior in tactical genius to either of them, he was able to analyze
the nature and limits of Shikamaru's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
and conducted battle accordingly (though he retained his arrogant
attitude even under these circumstances). Interestingly, he seemed to
panic when Shikamaru took control of his body, shouting at Kakuzu to do
something in a rather frantic voice. He didn't particularly like it
when Kakuzu assisted in his battles, and only called for his help when
he decided he needed it. Kakuzu tended to return the favor by coming in
"late" and letting Hidan "die" as punishment for his arrogance.

Hidan's primary ability was his inability to die, a result of
extensive experimenting with the Jashin religion's various jutsu. To
maintain this immortality, he must kill others, though it was unclear
how many or how often. His immortality allowed him to survive numerous
fatal injuries,^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} and almost any form of dismemberment; he even retained his ability to speak after having his head cut off.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} However, his head still needed to be connected to his body in order to control it,^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} so Kakuzu reattached it, and other body parts, when needed.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Even though he could survive these injuries, he was still susceptible
to pain, which he came to find pleasure in at the expense of his
opponents. This inability to die was the primary reason for his
partnership with Kakuzu. Since Kakuzu couldn't kill him, Kakuzu didn't
need to find new partners after his fits of rage.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Although the two disliked working together, this advantage made them the ideal team.

In battle, Hidan wielded a large crimson triple-bladed scythe, that
he used as a multi-purpose attack. He wielded it as a short- and
long-range weapon, though Shikamaru speculated it was intended to draw
blood, instead of doing damage. He controlled it with a long cable,
that was connected to a coil hidden under his robe. He was
exceptionally skilled at wielding it, capable of deflecting a swarm of
shuriken thrown at close range. Hidan stated that the large size
inhibited his attack speed, claiming he was the slowest attacker in
Akatsuki.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Nevertheless, Hidan was extremely agile, having tremendous acrobatic prowess and dexterity in avoiding attacks.
Using a weapon, Hidan made every attempt to acquire an opponent's
blood, where upon consuming it he drew the Jashin symbol on the ground.
This process somehow "linked" his body with his opponent's.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} Once this link was established, Hidan took on a Grim Reaper-like appearance, with black skin and white bone-like markings.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
In this state, he was essentially a living voodoo doll for his
opponent; any damage that was done to him was also inflicted on the

Hidan referred to this as his "curse", and he was fond of toying with
his victims by inflicting non-fatal injuries with his retractable
spike, while taking obvious pleasure in their shared pain.^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
Once he was done toying with the opponent, or if he wanted to kill them
quickly, he impaled himself through the heart, killing them^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]} and relishing in intense satisfaction.
Despite its effectiveness, the curse had many requirements, and
could be a slow technique to employ. The curse could be avoided if the
opponent happened to know what to look for, and knew of Hidan's
inability to die. The link between Hidan's curse and his opponent could
be broken prematurely if Hidan was removed from the symbol;^{[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]}
however, Hidan would remain in his transformed state, allowing the
curse to be easily re-established by him simply entering the symbol's

In Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho Character Official Data Book, Kishimoto revealed that Hidan's design, with the skeletal patterns and scythe, were meant to resemble a shinigami (死神, "death god," "grim reaper"),
because "Hidan uses curses and things." He also noted that he
originally planned for the scythe to have a number of special tricks,
but "didn't have time to show them all."

to take care of him. To cheer up Sasori, Chiyo began to teach him the
art of making puppets, and Sasori soon proved to be a born natural at
the art. He began making puppets at the age of five, and even made
puppets that resembled his parents to get rid of the terrible

But because they were only puppets, incapable of giving him the natural
parental love he desired, he lost interest in them. They later fell
into Chiyo's possession.

As a child, Sasori always seemed sad, due to the lack of parental love. When introduced to the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
by his grandmother, Chiyo, he grew a little happier. He eventually
created puppets with the likeness of his parents, but when the puppets
couldn't give him the parental love he desired, he became cold and
uncaring. This led to him having little regard for human life, and he
went so far to state that he would feel nothing if Chiyo died, as he
claimed that his heart had become like his puppet body: without any
emotions. Despite his cruelty, Sasori also had been shown to possess a
very down-to-earth outlook on life, rarely growing worked up over
obstacles that came his way. He also rarely showed any extreme
emotions, and even these instances were short-lived.

Sasori and his second partner in Akatsuki, Deidara, both had
conflicting views of art, and they frequently argued about their

Deidara maintained the opinion that art was something transient that
departs quickly, where as Sasori believed that fine art is something
wonderful that is left long into the future. This reflected their

Sasori was a master of puppetry and created a number of puppets
while he was in Sunagakure, including the three that Kankuro later

His status as a master puppeteer offered him a tremendous advantage
against other puppeteer shinobi, especially if the puppets they were
using happened to be formerly his own, as seen in his battle against
Kankuro. Skill-wise, Sasori could manipulate puppets at an incredible

As puppets are usually installed with long-range weapons, Sasori was an
expert at fighting at long distances. These skills were such that [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] occasionally said that Sasori was much stronger than he was.
Like his grandmother, Sasori also had mastery over creating
different types of poisons. His unique poisons, that he laced nearly
every weapon in his arsenal with, took effect instantly, and one such
poison could kill the target after three days of suffering. Sasori
initially believed this poison to be incurable, but later, to his
surprise, Sakura came up with a successful antidote for the poison.
Sasori's abilities were so great that he managed to defeat and kill the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], who was said to be the strongest and the most feared ninja in the history of Sunagakure.

of humans. These human puppets were more versatile than regular

abilities possessed by the converted human were also passed onto the

Hiruko was the first puppet to be shown being used by Sasori in the
series. Sasori actually wore this puppet as an armor, and controlled it
from the inside, thus eliminating the puppeteer's weakness of being a

Hiruko was his favorite puppet, such that he adorned it during nearly
his entire tenure with Akatsuki, and had it wear the Akatsuki cloak and
hat. Sasori used Hiruko so much that many Akatsuki members seemed to

when he visited the battlefield where Sasori's puppet body's remains
laid, where Zetsu seemed surprised by looking at his body, implying it
was his first time seeing it. Even when not amongst other Akastsuki did
it seem Sasori had worn Hiruko as Kabuto when confronted with Yamato
who had been inside a fake Hiruko did not know if he was Sasori or not.
On the other hand, Orochimaru did realize he was not Sasori, implying
he had seen Sasori's true face during his time with Akatsuki. Also,
within Hiruko, Sasori had a deeper and more hoarse voice. Hiruko had a long mechanical, scorpion-like tail (an allusion
to Sasori's name meaning "scorpion"), extending from the mouth of what
appeared to be a demon mask on its back, which was said to be a recent
addition by Sasori to add extra defense to a weak point in the puppet.
as implied by Chiyo. The tail worked as Hiruko's main offensive weapon,
and was laced with his poison. The tail was also used as an extra
defense by spinning it around his body at a rapid speed. Hiruko's left
arm was rigged with a projectile launcher capable of firing poisoned

techniques. When mixed with Sasori's poison, the Iron Sand was given a
more lethal edge. The Iron Sand could also be used to fill up the
joints of other puppets, thus immobilizing them. The Third's puppet's
right arm held several poisoned blades, while the left arm could open
up to reveal several summoning seals that summoned thousands of similar
arms to attack the target. These arms were capable of pinning down an
opponent, emitting poisonous gas clouds, and releasing wires that
dragged the opponent into the gas cloud. If these arms were cut off, a
small buzz-saw took their place.

Although Sasori was thirty-five years old, he maintained the
appearance of a teenage boy. Sasori's unnaturally young appearance was
a product of his design. Aside from his heart, Sasori's body was

In place of his stomach was a thick cable coiled around a pole,
allowing Sasori to use it as a stinger and retract it if necessary.
Attached to his back was a scroll holder, containing four scrolls that
seemed to serve as "ammunition", which Sasori used to store his human
puppets. Sasori also added a pair of poles to the back of his hips,
each equipped with five large blades that could spin like a propeller,
and pipes to each of his hands that could spew out intense fire or
powerful water jets. Despite being loaded with weapons, Sasori can keep

robes, which are large enough to conceal them without problem.
Curiously, when using "himself", Sasori's eyes were always wide open,
giving him a somewhat maniacal look. In contrast, prior to revealing
his puppet body, they were always half-closed, making him appear

Akatsuki, until his last battle with his grandmother and Sakura Haruno.
Installed in the right part of his chest was a mechanism that could spin numerous chakra strings, allowing Sasori to use his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
With it, he was given a drastic advantage over other puppeteers, such
that he claimed to have taken down an entire country with it. Sasori's
left part of his chest held the only part of him still human and thus
the only, and necessary, part of his body capable of controlling
chakra: a cylinder-shaped device containing his heart.
Because Sasori's heart was the only living part of himself, his
puppet body was virtually indestructible, allowing him to survive the
poison mist Kankuro bombarded him with, as well as the impact from
Sakura's punches. He was also immune to hindrances that would normally
affect a human's body, such as fatigue, muscle failure, and pain,
allowing him to move at full strength for extended periods of time.
When smashed apart, he could simply draw the pieces back together.
Additionally, he could transfer his heart to other puppets in a split
second, allowing him to abandon a body should it be damaged beyond
repair or otherwise incapacitated. How he transferred his facial
features, as depicted in the manga, was not explained; at one point, he
transferred to another puppet that somehow had his face.

From a young age, Orochimaru stood out as a prodigy. His talents,
knowledge, and determination were considered by his sensei a sight seen
once a generation.
According to Tsunade, Orochimaru had always been twisted, even
back when he was a child. His sadistic attitude was presumably due to
the death of his parents, which led him to study [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Jiraiya theorized that Orochimaru went down this path in an attempt to
forget his painful memories. Sarutobi in particular had had very high
hopes for Orochimaru, often berating the clumsy Jiraiya and telling him
he should be more like his teammate. After becoming the Third [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], Sarutobi hoped that one day Orochimaru would succeed him.

his eyes were set upon goals quite alien to the ideals traditionally

Hiruzen knew that "a shinobi's true strength will manifest when protecting something important",
and the Hokage's role is to love and protect the people of the village
as if they were a family. For Orochimaru, however, Hokage was nothing
more than a potential conquest on the way to what truly interested him
- power.
Hiruzen had hoped to make his student see the error of his
ways, but as more time passed, it became evident that Orochimaru was a
lost cause. When Hiruzen finally retired years later he chose a student

over Orochimaru as his successor, thus making Minato the Fourth Hokage.
Realizing that he had hit a dead end in his quest to become the
ultimate being and therefore had nothing to gain from staying in
Konoha, Orochimaru began to be less discreet with his actions. Over the years, he had been kidnapping his fellow Konoha
shinobi as human guinea pigs. He experimented on them to develop
techniques that would grant him immortality, as he had already decided
that he would settle for no less than to learn all jutsu in the world
(a task that would take much more than one human lifetime). When the
many disappearances were finally traced back to Orochimaru, Hiruzen
knew that it was his duty to kill him. At the time however, Hiruzen was
unable to bring himself to kill his prized student for whom he had had
such high hopes. Before Orochimaru defected he stole 60 infants in the hope of
recreating the First Hokage Wood Jutsu. Before he could finish his work
he was forced to leave Konoha, but he believed all the infants to be

Orochimaru defected from the village and joined the elite criminal organization of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
His former teammate, Jiraiya, tried to convince him to reconsider, but
to no avail. Although the role Orochimaru played in Akatsuki is
unclear, it is known that he was partnered with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
prior to his defection (the two apparently had great respect for each
other when they were partners; Sasori also claimed that he and
Orochimaru did a lot of good deeds when they were together in the
organization). It was around this time, that Itachi joined Akatsuki, that
Orochimaru saw his opportunity to gain possession of the Sharingan, and
soon Orochimaru made his attempt to steal [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s body. Orochimaru tried to use his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
but Itachi used his Sharingan to reverse it and cut off Orochimaru's
left hand to prevent him from breaking the Genjutsu, causing him to

village; Otogakure to perform various experiments on his prisoners.

Orochimaru's various human experiments took place so as to serve two
purposes, most prominent of which was his desire to learn every jutsu
in the Naruto world. Jiraiya speculated that this was due to
the fact that his parents died when he was at a very young age, and
flashbacks shown during his battle with the Third Hokage spoke to this
effect. Perhaps because he wanted to see his parents, or as a means of
avenging their deaths. Another reason might be that he witnessed
firsthand the deaths of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]'s younger brother, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and her lover, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and the pain that it caused her. He seemed saddened by the frailty of human life and how it affects those still living.
He experimented on others to see what kind of modifications the
human body can endure and to otherwise harness a subject's unique
abilities for himself. Once accomplishing this goal, Orochimaru had
hoped to be worthy of the title of "ultimate being". Because a
human's lifespan does not allow enough time to learn every jutsu,
Orochimaru also experimented on others so as to achieve immortality. By
living throughout the ages, Orochimaru needed to never worry about
death and thus all the knowledge he gained would never be lost.
Above all else, Orochimaru cared only for himself. He grew
bored when there was no conflict or violence in the world, and
immediately struck fear into others when they first met him. Though he
had a number of followers who would do anything for him, Orochimaru
treated them as mere pawns. He did not hesitate to send them to their
deaths for his own personal benefit, and only found remorse in their
loss if they were unable to properly complete a task. To win over these
followers to their disposable status, Orochimaru approached them with

to many of his stronger subordinates in order to corrode their body and
mind, making them more susceptible to his influence and control.
While he showed great interest in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] as a prodigy, Orochimaru had shown disdain toward [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], believing him to be a lost cause without any talent in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
arts. However, when Naruto injured Kabuto with his Rasengan (improved
with the use of Shadow Clones), Orochimaru thought Naruto would become
a threat in the future and tried to kill him. After the timeskip,
Orochimaru revealed he was now more interested in Naruto's development,
despite the failed murder attempt against him, taunting and angering
Naruto about Sasuke.
He trained Sasuke so he could become stronger to kill his older
brother, Itachi. But Orochimaru was actually planning to take over
Sasuke's body, and as a result the Sharingan, in his possession, would
sky-rocket him towards his prime objective of learning all the jutsu in
the world. Because of that, he would help Sasuke in whatever he needed,
with the knowledge he had to become his new vessel. However, he hadn't
truly planned on foul play from Sasuke, who never intended to become
Orochimaru's new body, instead always planning on creating his own
platoon and leaving Orochimaru behind. Orochimaru showed little
surprise when Sasuke moved to betray him, merely saying "so, it came

Orochimaru made a small appearance in the second Shippūden movie.
Feeling that his time was running out before he had to transfer his
soul again, but fearing that the repeated use of his jutsu was starting

who had developed his own immortality jutsu. At the end of the movie,
Sasuke failed to get the man, but did retrieve the scroll containing
the jutsu's information. Orochimaru noticed that Sasuke's demeanor

Being one of the Sannin, as well as a former member of Akatsuki,
Orochimaru is an extraordinarily powerful ninja. His power is so great
that, around the time of of his invasion of Konoha, the Third Hokage
feared that no-one alive in Konoha could defeat or even fight on equal
footing with him, even the Third Hokage himself. Orochimaru was also

in Part II while his body was in a weakened state, and despite the
danger Naruto imposed, he found the battle highly entertaining. Due to
him rarely being shown fighting, he has only displayed a limited amount

Orochimaru's true form after many experiments



In his quest to gain immortality, Orochimaru has made a number of
modifications to his body, resulting in his natural form taking on the
appearance of a giant, white snake composed of many smaller snakes.
This form has the advantages of allowing him to stretch any part of his
body to great lengths, regenerate any wound inflicted upon him, and
otherwise use the snakes that he is composed of for attacks. The
primary use of the form is with his [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
which allows him to transfer his soul to another's body and extend his
life indefinitely. To use this jutsu, Orochimaru leaves his former
body, revealing his true form. Once he has done this, he swallows the
new body and transports its current inhabitant to a dimension within
himself where he absorbs them, thus allowing him to take over their
body.
Orochimaru can only perform this technique once every three
years, which is also around the time that his new body begins to reject
him and forces him to find a new host. Although he might leave their
bodies behind, the souls of those whose bodies he has taken always
remain within Orochimaru's subconscious. After taking over another
body, Orochimaru modifies it to suit his theme of snakes, in order to

This makes that even if Orochimaru is unable to transfer body, he can
allow it to greatly heal and evade attacks, rendering him virtually
immortal.

which allowed him to revive the dead. To perform the technique,
Orochimaru must sacrifice a living human so that the soul of the
deceased person can be tied to the living world. The sacrificed body is
then surrounded with dirt and dust that compacts into the shape of the
summoned soul's original body. Although the revived retain their
original memories and personalities, thus leaving them out of the
control of Orochimaru, he can suppress their free wills with his own
special seal to force them to do his bidding. The bodies of the
resurrected are also able to regenerate any wound, meaning the only way
to defeat them is to remove the soul within them.

Orochimaru has an apparent affinity with snakes that, in addition to
impacting the appearance and composition of his true form, has caused
him to learn a number of snake-related abilities. One such ability is
being able to summon giant snakes to fight alongside him in battle,

his own throat, is able to extend to great lengths and can be
controlled remotely by Orochimaru. Although he was capable of using the

As one of the villains in the story, Kishimoto created Orochimaru as
an antithesis to the protagonists' values. His snake-like appearance
and related features were intended to make it easier for the reader to
recognize that he is a villain. In an interview, Kishimoto asserted
that making the villains "flamboyant" was one of his "guiding
principles", and attributed this to his desire to have the villains
possess a "powerful aura".
Following this theme of distinguishing villains, Kishimoto
attempted to make Orochimaru's face appear "pasty and sickly," which
serves to emphasize the "scary looks" that Kishimoto frequently has
Orochimaru performing in the manga. As these occurrences are his
"trademark", Kishimoto modifies Orochimaru's appearance and the scene
to focus on Orochimaru's face; for instance, highlights that are
normally added to Orochimaru's hair are removed and the background is
blanked out to create a "creepy atmosphere".

• Orochimaru borrows heavily from Japanese literature — his name
  (meaning: great snake circle), as well as those of Jiraiya and Tsunade

Deidara was originally from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
although he readily abandoned the village for the opportunity of using
his "art" more frequently, as his village ridiculed him for it. Deidara
became an assassin bomber for hire, not caring who he worked with as
long as he could use his artwork. Sometime after [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] left [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], Deidara was located by [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], who were under the orders of the leader, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
to recruit him. Deidara refused at first, resulting in Itachi
challenging him, promising to leave him alone if Deidara won. Deidara
willingly accepted Itachi's challenge, but was easily defeated by
Itachi's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and joined the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Deidara, having taken a huge blow to his ego, carried a murderous
loathing for Itachi and other Uchiha for the rest of his life, although
he was intelligent enough to recognize Itachi as a more powerful
opponent. However, he did take steps during his time with Akatsuki to
get revenge on Itachi, such as training to counter [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Personality


Quick to be angered and annoyed, Deidara was very hot-headed.
Something of a sadistic arsonist, he was not above relishing a good
fight, and he often blew up his opponents in a very brutal fashion.
Deidara's most distinctive trait, however, was his love of art. He
would respect any form of it, even if it disagreed with his own.
Deidara also had a habit of ending his sentences with nasal-like
grunts, roughly translated as "yeah" or "hmmm". The latter is used in
the VIZ version.
Deidara referred to his explosive ninjutsu as art, believing
each bomb he made to be a significant accomplishment. He referred to
his style as [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (referring to certain types of art), and claimed [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (another art style) is dead. One of Deidara's catchphrases, "Art is an Explosion!" (芸術は爆発だ, Geijutsu wa Bakuhatsu da), was originally coined by famous Japanese abstract artist [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
(several of Deidara's explosives have resembled Okomoto's works too).
Deidara was very proud of his art, to the point that he was simply
unwilling to accept that anything could defeat it, leading to frequent
overconfidence in battle.
Deidara referred to his partner Sasori as Master Sasori (サソリの旦那, Sasori no Danna; English TV
"Sasori, my man"), out of respect for him as a fellow artist. He also
admitted, at least outwardly, that Sasori was more powerful than he
was. In spite of this, Deidara wasn't above goading his partner, and
they frequently squabbled over the nature of true art (Deidara holding
that art is transient and departing quickly; Sasori believing fine art
is something wonderful that's left long into the future). This
reflected their individual natures (Deidara made clay sculptures that
exploded; Sasori made long-lasting puppets out of humans). Deidara
outwardly seemed to respect Sasori's beliefs, but couldn't resist
getting a final jab in after Sasori's death.
Deidara's partnership with his second partner, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], however, was very different. Tobi apparently held a great respect for Deidara, and frequently called him "senpai" (先輩, senior).
Tobi's carefree and goofy personality did not please Deidara, who
believed that all Akatsuki members should be calm and serious. Tobi
frequently and unintentionally angered Deidara, which usually resulted
in him attacking Tobi in a comedic fashion (e.g. blasting him with his
exploding clay or strangling him with his legs). In battle, however,
the two quickly set aside their differences, and worked well together.
Deidara also seemed to have a minor sense of respect for Tobi, as shown
when he apologized to his partner in his thoughts before he initiated
his Self-Destruction technique.

within him. Although he attempted a stealthy infiltration of the
village, Deidara was quickly confronted by Gaara, who launched an
offensive against him. In the ensuing battle, Deidara's left arm was
crushed, but he was still able to claim victory by mixing some of his
clay into Gaara's sand, causing Gaara's own weapon to backfire. With
Gaara captured, Deidara and Sasori convened with the rest of Akatsuki
to extract Shukaku.

looking for his arm, in order to get back his Akatsuki ring. He found

Deidara appeared later, with his arms successfully reattached by
Kakuzu. In the anime, he and his new partner, Tobi, found that their
next mission was to capture the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Along the way, they took a break at a nearby dango shop. Deidara also
showed an interest in what Tobi looked like behind his mask, only for
him to be tricked by Tobi to look away for a moment. They split up
afterward to seek out the beast.
Later, Deidara snuck up behind two [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
who were making a report of the three tails. Tobi congratulated
Deidara, and they headed for the lake. Deidara commented that, since
Tobi was a part of Akatsuki, he should be able to capture the beast
himself. Tobi ran as it was chasing him, but got tangled up with the
three tails. Deidara sent an exploding clay into the lake and it
detonated, allowing Tobi to capture it. As they both took the
Three-Tails away, Tobi fell asleep while Deidara was talking, which
Deidara responded to by exploding more clay next to him.

Having wanted to kill Orochimaru himself, Deidara and Tobi seeked out Orochimaru's killer: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
the younger brother of Itachi Uchiha. When they finally found Sasuke,
Tobi assisted in Deidara's assault against him. Despite showing some
success, Sasuke proved able to counteract all of Deidara's efforts
because of his Sharingan and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]-based abilities. Deidara cursed the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], as well as Itachi and Sasuke, and made one last attempt to defeat the Uchiha by using [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to blow himself up. The attempt failed, as Sasuke summoned [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to protect himself, at the cost of Manda's life, leaving Deidara's death to be in vain.

Deidara was very intelligent, often using tricks, misdirection, and
calculated gambles to get his explosives in range of an opponent, like
he did in the fight against Gaara, putting clay into Gaara's sand when
it destroyed his arm. As a long-range specialist, he was weaker in
close combat, but skilled enough to hold off a close combat battle with

and had a variety of techniques in his arsenal to escape close quarters
when necessary. Deidara's abilities were well recognized within
Akatsuki, and the leader, Pain, openly admitted that he was something
unique, and that his loss was a major blow to the group.

A fancy and skillful fighter, Deidara possessed special mouths in the palm of each hand to create [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], chakra-infused clay that detonated with the command Katsu (喝) and a single-hand [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
This clay could be molded into a wide variety of shapes and forms,
growing to large sizes when infused with chakra (with Deidara
performing the necessary hand seals), and could be controlled at will.
This allowed him to create living explosives to attack opponents at
long range. Deidara could even create clones from the clay, named [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],
that could be a deadly surprise for opponents. Deidara's clay creations
ranged from microscopic to gigantic in size, allowing him to adapt to
any situation. Deidara could also use the clay for other purposes, as
he was frequently seen creating birds to be used for transportation. It

which he used to avoid damage from one of his mass-scale bombs.
However, he could potentially run out of clay if he used too much of
